I purchased Turbotax Deluxe 2025 with federal and state return included and 1 federal free efile. I am a nonresident in california and US for whole of 2025. I entered my address as "Foreign address". Turbotax Deluxe computes my federal taxes correctly. 1) When I go to State return, it says CA tax= $0 because I lived outside US and I do not need to file California return! That is NOT correct. California requires me to file 540NR for my California source income. Part-year resident and nonresident | FTB.ca.gov 2) I clicked on "Get another State" and tried to download California version and it is charging me another $40, though my Turbotax Deluxe includes 1 free State return! Can you please correct errors in Turbotax Deluxe 2025, so that I can file 540NR ? Thanks!

I would download a new copy to reinstall the program from your account. Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account when you first install it, all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac) you can download it again. And the download will have all the updates. Sign onto your account here to download the program and to get the license code https://accounts.intuit.com/app/account-manager/productsBilling/turbotax

Are you trying to enter a IRA distribution or what? You need to wait to get the 1099R. It should be in your name and your ssn. There will be a code in box 7 probably a code 4.

There is a way. Very common. After you get the program installed or reinstalled the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW). Enter some basic information, then go to the state tab and download the state program. Then try to open your existing return, go to FILE - OPEN Error 190 for state https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/bugs-and-error-messages/help/error-190-when-opening-file-in-turbotax-desktop/00/26443

Always get default screen, with no returns found. Loaded, attached from PC. Don't get anywhere. Can't get live chat.

See https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/loans/whats-turbotax-flex-advance/L2Xg6I... You'll probably have to call the number listed on that site.

You can check your own online account with the IRS:

Thank you very much for your kind help! Could I ask two follow-up questions?: "file 1040-NR return recognizing the US sourced income" --> In my case, could I file the 1040-NR through Turbotax? "claiming Foreign Tax credit ( for taxes placed on this income by your tax-home country" --> Could you explain how I can claim this in the 1040-NR? Or is there a separate form to be submitted for this Foreign Tax? Is there any documentation I should obtain from the National tax agency in my home country Japan? Thank you again!

At this point, you can't amend those tax years. Rather, you need to file a 3115, which gets filed with your current year return with a second copy sent to the IRS. Regardless, preparing a 3115 is really not a DIY endeavor so you should consult with a local tax pro.

Are you trying to prepare a 1041 for your father's trust? If so, you have all of the information you need with the possible exception of the basis, which would either be a big fat zero OR the FMV on the date your father passed. You presented a curious set of facts, regardless, because the land having been in the family for such a long period of time, I'm wondering what happened with the trust your grandfather created. The land should still have been titled in the name of that trust unless it was somehow distributed to the beneficiary(ies). As a pure sidebar, trust property is technically not "inherited" but passes by operation of law according to the terms of the trust itself.

Q. Do I need to file city tax or school district returns if I have amount in W2 box 18 &19 ?
A. Yes, probably.
But, there's a major exception. You normally only have to file a city income tax return in the city you live in. It is not necessary to file one in the city you work in, if different. Your employer will remit withholding to the city you work in, but you do not file a city return unless you're claiming a refund or your employer didn't withhold enough ( both highly unusual).
Only school district residents file a return & pay the School District (SD) Income tax (SDIT). Non residents who only work within a taxing SD are not subject to withholding. If SD withholding was mistakenly withheld, you will need to file an SDIT return, to get a refund.
