Yes, and that's a good thought. Frankly, the rules need to be changed to accommodate this scenario as I'm sure it happens to a ton of taxpayers who have a windfall of sorts in one year.

A few things could be wrong:   1. If you have no tax liability, then depending on which type of heat pump, you would not be able to claim the credit.  If it is a Geothermal Heat Pump, then you would be able to carry forward the credit if you have no tax liability this year, but would not see any difference in your taxes this year.  Look at line 18 of your form 1040 to see if you have any tax liability for the credit to be used.    2. The Unit you purchased is not one that meets the energy star requirements for the tax credit. Starting January 1, 2025, the IRS requires a Product Identification Number (PIN) for certain energy-efficient property, including air-source heat pumps. The heat pump must meet or exceed the highest non-advanced tier set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). Simply being "Energy Star" is sometimes not enough for the full $2,000$ credit.   3  You selected that the heat pump (other than geothermal) was not installed on your main home in the US   The Home Improvement Energy Efficient Credit Worth up to 30% of costs with a maximum credit $2,000 for Air source heat pumps Heat Pump Water Heaters Biomass Stoves or Boilers Worth up to 30% of qualifying costs for a maximum combined total of $1,200 for the following: Doors, Windows and Skylights Insulation Natural Gas, Oil Propane Water Heaters Furnaces Boilers Central Air Conditioners Electrical Panel Upgrades Home Energy Audit (up to $150) You can combine the $2,000 credit with the $1,200 credit for a total of $3,200 This credit is a is a nonrefundable credit. This means in order to claim the credit you must have a tax liability to offset it.  If you do not have a tax liability equal to the credit the credit will be reduced to match your liability or down to $0.   use it or lose it credit.  If you do have enough tax liability in the year you buy and install the item, you will not be able to carry the credit forward. Doors, windows and insulation must be installed on your primary home. The home must be in the US     The Residential Energy Credit is also a non-refundable credit, however this one can be carried forward to future tax years until this credit goes away which is currently set to happen in 2034 This credit is worth up to 30% of the cost of the equipment, with no maximum limit.  The items that fall into this category are as follows: Geothermal Heat Pumps Small Wind Turbines Solar Energy Systems Fuel Cells Battery Storage Technology This credit can be taken for new construction   To enter these credits into TurboTax take the following steps: Federal Deductions and Credits I'll Choose what I work on Home Energy Credits which is under the "Your Home" category   https://www.energystar.gov/about/federal_tax_credits   TurboTax Online Version Select Tools. Go to Tax Tools. Select Preview My 1040 (or go to the print center). TurboTax Desktop Version You can simply switch to forms mode.

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

I suggest you look at the copy of your tax return and see if there is an entry on line 27(a) of your Form 1040, which would be for the earned income credit, or line 28 for the additional child tax credit. If you don't have any entries on those lines, you can ignore the message. When the IRS processes the return, it will not be held up for those credits if you don't have those on your return.
I’ve tried entering my address in the form via the walk thru, Smart check and directly on the form and it doesn’t stay.  What do I do now?
I need my 2024 taxes so I can have my irs form 1040
Step 2 in the Filing process will not allow me to move forward to Step 3 so I can file all tax returns.

@DaveF1006 - I believe there is a bug in 1099-Q entry for Turbotax 2025 desktop versions, which was just released yesterday...  When entering 1099-Q and selecting recipient as someone other than dependent, the program does not present questions related to entry of education expenses in the 1099-Q worksheet, the QTP worksheet, or the 5329-T form.  These forms are generated behind the scenes, but no interview questions are presented to collect education expense data. I used forms mode to make needed entries, but the interview is missing these steps.  The way I figured-out what to do was by going back to 2024 software, walking thru the step-by-step and closely examing the forms.    Note - I also tried to enter education expenses thru the 1098-T section, and no interview questions were presented that would populate room/board and other expenses in the student info worksheet.   I assume someone from Intuit is monitoring these forums so hopefully they will enter a ticket on this issue.

This thread is basically 4 years old as was the last post.   Perhaps someone with specific knowledge of TurboTax Business AND this scenario will respond but it's not likely.
