If the check was made payable to the new IRA for your benefit, not to you, no Form 1099-R should have been issued.  Erroneously issuing a Form 1099-R under these circumstances is usually the result of an under-trained bank employee marking the wrong box on the form that initiates the transaction, calling it a distribution instead of a transfer.  (Having the check made payable to the brokerage firm for your benefit instead of explicitly to the new IRA for your benefit does introduce some ambiguity as to whether the movement of the funds was a transfer or was instead a distribution.)   Because TurboTax is programmed to know that a distribution made to a non-spouse beneficiary, reported on From 1099-R, is ineligible for rollover, TurboTax will not allow you to report the distribution as having been rolled over.   If the original IRA custodian will not correct the Form 1099-R to show that $0 was distributed, you'll need to submit a substitute Form 1099-R (Form 4852) showing a gross distribution of $0 and explaining that this movement of funds was a trustee-to-trustee transfer, not a distribution. Note that Form 4852 cannot be e-filed.

I spoke with a Turbo Tax rep. This is a Turbo Tax calculation error, and they are aware of it. They recommend to go to File tab and choose "Remove State Return" and then redo the state return. If that does not work, they suggest to manually adjust the PA Fed/State depreciation adjustment worksheet.
There's no way to give feedback, but you can leave a comment in this forum with the name of your helper on it. We'll make sure it gets to the TurboTax Moderators.  Thanks!

Different states have different ways of calculating the tax owed by part year residents.  Some only calculate the tax rate on the portion of income taxable to their state.     Some, like Pennsylvania, calculate the tax that would be due if 100% of your income were taxable to the state and then - after calculating that tax at the tax rate that you would have if all your income were taxable to PA - the state takes the percentage of that tax based on your percentage of income that is PA's.     All of which is to say that even though your gains aren't taxable in PA they are still used to calculate your tax by PA.

@soozau wrote: I now live in WA and have been using Turbo Tax for many years. For 22,23 and 24, I worked for two CA employers. I am a W2 employee for one of them and a 1099 contractor for the other. Is TurboTax smart enough to not have reported my W2 income on my CA tax returns for those years? Or do I need to amend my CA taxes for those years and hopefully get a refund? You need to check your own returns.  Download or print the PDF of your return, does it include a CA state income tax return, and what is reported?   If you are a W-2 employee in Washington state for a California-based employer, your wages are not taxable in California.  Turbotax would only create a CA state return if you told it to, or if you had California tax withholding in box 16 and 17 of your W-2.  If you did have CA withholding, you would have filed a CA non-resident return to report no state wages, no state tax owed, and claim a refund of the withholding.  (And you should contact your employers to stop any CA withholding.)   If you are self-employed, California taxes your income if your client(s) are located in California, regardless of where you lived or physically performed the work.  This is something you would have to declare yourself, and you would have to manually allocate your self-employment income to California (all or part, depending on the facts.)

To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954.   Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.   TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.      First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.     You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:    https://www.irs.gov/refunds   To track your state refund:     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr   If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refunds-take-longer-others/L14YlqFrH_US_en_US?uid=lexdr7zh . https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst         If you are getting earned income credit on line 27 or additional child tax credit on line 28 You are subject to the delay required by the PATH act.  Do not expect your refund before early March   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/internal-revenue-service/federal-refunds-delayed-due-path-act/L5jnQJsBi_US_en_US   Note:  “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”.  TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing.   Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing.  If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.   FROM THE IRS WHERE’S MY REFUND SITE: https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund How it works Where's My Refund shows your refund status: Return Received – We received your return and are processing it. Refund Approved – We approved your refund and are preparing to issue it by the date shown. Refund Sent – We sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail. It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.

First, make sure your software is fully updated, and then try again by selecting Wages & Income > Investments from the menu.   If the manual updates do not resolve the issue, there are some general FAQ troubleshooting practices for issues with TurboTax Desktop: To make sure TurboTax runs smoothly: Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements. Make sure you have administrator rights on your computer and TurboTax is running as administrator: Right-click the TurboTax icon or setup icon and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, select the Run this program as administrator box and select OK. In the Control Panel under Internet Options, add https://*.intuit.com to Trusted Sites. Set security level to Medium. Turn off antivirus software and Windows Defender. Add TurboTax Desktop to your allowed apps in Windows Defender. Clean up and defragment your hard drive. Run Windows Update to keep your computer up-to-date. Update your computer's hardware drivers. Update your security software for firewall, virus, and spyware protection. Make sure you're the only user on your computer running TurboTax. If you're not, switch users and sign out of TurboTax from the other account. If you can't do that, shut down your computer and try again. (Error: 70001) Alternative steps for Mac users.   You can also uninstall and reinstall your desktop product (this has worked for some users). *Make sure that you save and back up your file (you do not want to lose any data - See: How do I back up my tax file in the TurboTax Desktop software?

Yes, you can edit Form 1310 (Statement of Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer) in the Online program before you submit your return.   Edit Form 1310: Open or continue your return. Search for "1310" in the Search box. Click on  the "Jump to 1310" link... when you land on the screen, "Complete a Claim for Refund.", you can answer Yes (or continue) to go through the screens (changing the representative's information, the reason for the claim, or how the refund should be issued as needed). If the search doesn't work, make sure you have correctly marked the taxpayer as deceased in the Personal Info (or "My Info") section. The program won't generate or allow edits to Form 1310 unless the "Passed away" box is checked for that individual.   Note: If you are a court-appointed representative (Box B): You may not be able to e-file because the IRS requires you to attach a copy of the court certificate. Thus, you may need to print and mail the return.   If you are not court-appointed (Box C): You can generally e-file without an issue.
Thank you! I really appreciate your help.  Love this forum.

In TurboTax Online, charitable donations typically flow from your federal return to the Massachusetts state return automatically if applicable for 2023 and later. You can check this by going to the State Taxes tab, then selecting Massachusetts. Look for the section labeled Adjustments or Part B, where those amounts will be reflected. If you want to confirm the amount or make manual entries, check the Deductions & Credits under the Massachusetts state section. If your donations are reported correctly on the federal side, TurboTax usually transfers the amounts you need for Massachusetts automatically to meet filing requirements.

I'm sorry for the loss in your family this year. Both ordinary income from business (Box 1) and other income from business (Box 11) wind up on your Schedule C as QBI, so it seems that everything is calculating correctly per your tax return input. As for the treatment of the income at the partner level (flowing it thru Box 11, rather than Box 1), unfortunately, you would have to reach out to the partnership accountant and tax preparer to get an answer about this information; there are a lot of complications when a partner is no longer in the partnership, and it depends on what has happened previously with the business activity.

My last follow-up post got deleted, maybe because I mentioned the possibility of changing to a competitor which I named. I am very disappointed that Support has a bias -- the bias is that TurboTax Online software is perfect, so any problem must be user error.  When someone reports a bug in the software, it seems to be ignored.  No one from software development has posted anything helpful here.  A person can waste hours and hours on the phone trying to get a bug fixed, but the bias is that there is no bug, the software is perfect, I'm just not holding my mouth right. The truth is that TurboTax Online does not know how to handle a simple Recharacterization of Contribution, which is a trustee-to-trustee transfer from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA.  Pursuant to IRS Reg. 1.408A-5, this contribution is treated as having been made to the Roth IRA on the original date of the contribution to the Traditional IRA.  There is no change in tax owed if the original contribution was not deductible.  It's simple, a piece of cake, but TurboTax can't handle it. Next step:  File a 1040-X myself, manually, without TurboTax, and claim a refund of tax preparation fees under the Maximum Savings Guarantee, for lack of "100% accurate calculations."

This usually happens when your residency dates or state allocation weren’t entered correctly in the state interview.   In TurboTax, go back to the “My Info” section, scroll down to Other State Income, and confirm your move date (01/30/2025). Make sure both Pennsylvania and South Carolina are marked as part-year resident states, then revisit each state return to allocate income based on when it was earned.
