I hope that this is helpful to you.   TurboTax Online will use the simplified method to determine the taxable portion for box 2a of your CSA 1099-R.   Presume that:    Monthly payments were received, and That box 7 is code 7. You will need to know:    The amount of the employee contributions (should be in box 9b), The date the annuity started, The number of months that payments were received in 2025,  Tax-free amount previously recovered, if any, The age of the recipient when the annuity started, The age of other beneficiaries (if there are any), and  Was the recipient under the retirement age for the plan. Follow these steps:    Down the left side of the screen, click Federal. Down the left side of the screen, click Wages & Income. Click on the down arrow to the right of Retirement Plans and Social Security. Click to the right of IRA 401(k) Pension Plan Withdrawal (1099-R). At the screen Who gave you a 1099-R, select  Office of Personnel Management (CSA 1099-R). At the screen Annuity information, select Yes for the question Did you get periodic payments from this retirement account on a regular basis? At the screen Annuity information, select No for the question Did you start getting payments in 2025. At the screen Annuity information, select No for the question For the years you received these distributions, was the total amount shown in the form the amount you paid tax on? At the screen Annuity information, enter the annuity start date, plan cost, months payments were received and amount recovered in previous years.  (This will be $0 if this is the first year that you receive the payment.) At the screen Annuity Information, Plan Cost should be in box 9b. At the screen Annuity Information, enter the beneficiary ages. The taxable amount will be computed by the simplified method. View Federal 1040 tax return line 5a and 5b at Tax Tools / Tools / View Tax Summary / Preview my 1040.   @ae_servati

Hello, we arrived in the U.S. in April 2022 on j1 research visa and we are Egyptian citizens. We were eligible for tax treaty benefits under the U.S. Egypt tax treaty and claimed treaty benefits with our employer at the time. However, we did NOT file tax returns for 2022 and 2023. In 2024, we filed as resident aliens. We are now planning to file 2025 normally, and file late returns for 2022 and 2023. My concern is: Will filing late and overstaying more than two years cause us to lose our tax treaty benefits retroactively for 2022 and 2023? Thank you.

Yes, if you have a service related disability, you may still be able to claim the Michigan deduction under MI-1040CR-2.  The exact wording in the instructions is "A veteran with a service-connected disability or veteran’s surviving spouse". It does not require 100% from the VA, but the credit is limited based on your percentage disabled per the VA.   In any case, you are ineligible if your total household resources are over $71,200 This would be on MI-1040CR-2, there is not another form that needs completed, but you should have questions regarding your percentage of disability.  (Edited 2/24/26 @ 7:04AM PST) @Jimbo25

It is such poor business when customers have to go searching and digging for a solution that the product representatives do not attempt or know about.  If this fix was simply Turbotax is making us upgrade to a more premium version to charge more, you would think their own employees would have known this solution immediately and we would not have been told to go on the wild goose chase of using a different browser, clear cookies, cache, had the rep remote in, etc.  to then be told they simply cannot offer a solution.  I am saddened that I wasn't able to use Turbotax this tax year, after this fiasco, I doubt I will ever return.
This was the case before OBBB. You no longer have to itemize in order to get the deduction.

This message in the "My Info" section is usually the result of one specific answer to the "Residency" or "Support" questions.    Here are the most likely reasons to check and how to fix it:   In the interview, there is a question that asks: "Did [Son's Name] provide more than half of his own support?" How did you answer this?  Yes means your son paid for his own life (rent, food, etc.), which automatically disqualifies him as a dependent. If you supported him: Answer No. To be a "Qualifying Child," he must have lived with you for more than half the year (7 months or more). Temporary Absences: If he was away at college, that counts as living with you. Make sure you select "Whole Year" or the number of months he was both home and at school. Newborns: If he was born in 2025, you must select "Whole Year" (even if he was born in December). The IRS counts a baby born any time in 2025 as living with you the entire year. For the 2025 tax year, the age limits are strict: Under 19: He qualifies regardless of school status. Aged 19–23: He must be a full-time student for at least 5 months of the year. If you didn't check the "Full-time student" box, he will be disqualified. Aged 24+: If your son is 24 or older, he can still be your dependent, but only if he made less than $5,200 in 2025 and you paid for more than half of his living expenses.

There is nothing that you need to do other than enter your accurate date of birth.  The enhanced deduction is included automatically.   The additional senior deduction enacted due to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) is not reported as part of the standard deduction on your tax return.  Instead, you will see it included on Form 1040 line 13b.    Amounts shown on line 13b can be traced back to Schedule 1-A line 38 where the total Enhanced Deduction for Seniors is calculated.

There could be several reasons. If you had state tax withheld, you could get the state tax refunded, so if the tax withheld for Maine was excessive, you would get the excess as a Maine refund As a resident of Maryland, you need to claim all your income. Even if no Maryland state tax was withheld, you may be getting a refundable Maryland State credit, such as the Maryland Earned Income Credit.    These are just possibilities, it is impossible to say the true reason without looking at your return.  You can look your return over to see were the refunds are coming from.    To preview your Form 1040 Tax Return including your state returns, using TurboTax Online, please select Tax Tools on the left side bar, then TOOLS from the drop-down that opens (you may need to play with the scroll bar on the left side to see these options) Next, select "View Tax Summary" on the Tools Center Screen On the left side bar you can find "Preview my 1040" Select "Preview my 1040" If using TurboTax Desktop, simply switch to FORMS located at the top right corner (left on MAC)

That is correct.  Although there was the ability with some manufacturers to claim the Residential Energy Credit for the solar portion of the skylights, Velux has issued a statement saying they are not able to certify that their products are eligible for an energy credit.  This means Velux products are no longer eligible for the credit.    "After a recent review of US tax law, we find that we are unable to certify that any solar powered  skylight, accessory or related installation cost qualify under the Residential Clean Energy Credit 25(D). As a result, VELUX will refrain from promoting the IRS code section 25(D) as a consumer incentive."
