Form 5497 IRA Contribution Information where does it go on the tax forms
Where can I find the "required RMD" on my Morgan Stanley retirement account?
You are correct.  The $2500 qualifies for 1244 treatment, the other $47,500 is just a loss from an investment.

I’m not sure, I originally listed my marital status as divorced, although I have been divorced for 25+ years. My filing status is single.  Maybe it was a glitch?

You may need to close TurboTax for the display on the Deduction topics screen to update.  This doesn't affect your tax return if you've already made your entries.   If you're using TurboTax Desktop, in FORMS you can check that your entries populated the forms properly.  Make sure your program is updated from the ONLINE link at the top.   @dhoover57
The program update to be released by February 21st is expected to address any remaining issues. @lz7rdg

Did you itemize deductions in 2024 or take the standard deduction on your Federal 1040 tax return?  If you took the standard deduction, then nothing will be taxable on either a Virginia refund or rebate.  Even if you itemized deductions last year, it is still possible that your Virginia rebate and refund will not be taxable.  Because the state and local income tax deduction for itemizing was capped at $10,000 in 2024, your refund and rebate won't be taxed in 2025 as long as subtracting those two amounts from the total state and local tax paid last does not reduce your itemizing deduction below $10,000.   For example, if you itemized in 2024 and had $11,000 of state and local taxes (including property tax), you would have only been able to claim $10,000 (because of the cap).  If the total of your Virginia 2024 rebate and refund is under $1,000 (the difference between the $11,000 of tax you could claim vs. the $10,000 you were able to claim), you will not be taxed on any of this on your Federal 1040.  Any amounts over the rebate + refund that exceeds $1,000 will be taxable income on your Federal 1040.   If TurboTax is still causing issues for you on this topic, please reply back with more detail on what Smart Check is saying "isn't".
I am having this problem as well is this a form from the IRS or by TurboTax?

Tomorrow; we've been advised by management that the work on the depreciation section of TurboTax is continuing and expected to be completed by the evening of Thursday, February 19th. Note that this update will affect depreciation for Schedule E (Rental Properties) only. Schedule C (Self-Employment) was updated previously, and should be working in all versions of TurboTax.  (Problems receiving the update? See: troubleshooting for TurboTax Online)   You can sign up at this link to be notified via email when the depreciation and amortization forms are available in TurboTax.

TT has acknowledged this bug, has correctly described it back to me and has also identified the workaround (available to download people; online people, you're stuck). Federal Taxes > Deductions and Credits > [Education Section] ESA and 529 Distributions (form 1099-Q)... The software interview proceeds fine at the beginning, but is MISSING important questions later on. Consequence: if you, as a parent, received a 1099-Q for a 529-plan distribution out to YOU which you then turned around and spent on qualified higher education expenses, TT will treat this as taxable income to you.  That's only supposed to happen if you screw up and pocket the money. The reason TT makes this error is that the interview in 2025 FAILS TO EVEN ASK what you spent the money on. Workaround (for download customers): Goto "Forms" (upper right hand corner) At left, select "Form 1099-Q" This is not a tax form, but a worksheet titled "Form 1099-Q Payments from Qualified Education Programs (Under sections 529 and 530) Part of this form is filled in correctly by TT software, but if you scroll down, you eventually get to a section called: "Qualified Tuition Program (QTP) Computation of Taxable Distribution" Turbotax will have seeded lines 2a, 2b and/or 2c with zeroes....because the software never asked you the questions for these data points.  If you have download software version you can do what I did, right click, "overwrite" both numbers in line 12b, and write in the 529-qualifying education expenses for which you spent your 529 distribution. After that, the basic arithmetic of TT works correctly. This should be a SIMPLE fix for Turbotax - just put in a question in the interview to feed these data points.  It existed in 2024 version of the software.   This is not a calculation error or a mistaken pull of data into the wrong field.  It is simply the failure to even SEED a worksheet with starting data. Unforunately, after 2 weeks, Turbotax STILL hasn't emailed me back as they promised.  I called in and after speaking to three people and waiting for 71 minutes, we determined that the developer assigned to my inquiry had 1) correctly and perfectly understood the issue I described above, and 2) came up with the very same work around. Then the case was closed.  No actual fix to the software.  No reply back to me. Bugs happen.  That's life.  But botched communications and half-assed efforts at fixing bugs are ENTIRELY within TurboTax/ Intuit's control.  Intuit continues to let us down.
