The Form 1040-X for amending a 2025 federal tax return is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 02/19/2026   You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return. If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again. If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return. Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS. Does it matter if she was a NJ Resident before we placed her in a NJ nursing home in 2024?  We then sold her NJ house in 2024 and changed her address to her sibling/POA's PA address for Social Security, Medicare, all banking and financial investments, etc. All of her affairs are managed by her sibling POA in PA.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.    Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:     Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")  Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.  Subtab Other Tax Situations  Scroll down to Other Return Info.  Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)  Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"  Or another way:  Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")  Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.  In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.  Enter IP PIN without quotes.  In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.  Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"      Here's how you can fix a reject:  Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.    Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.    Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.    Additional reject instruction here.

It depends on where/how you got them:  Personal gift: The gift cards may have been taxable income to the GIVER when you RECEIVED them if a single person gave you more than the gift exclusion amount, which is $19,000 for 2025.  Exchanging a cash equivalent item such as gift cards or vouchers for either cash or items is not in itself a taxable act unless you sell them for more than the amount of the "gift".   Taxable: Caveat that if you received them from your employer or as "prize money" then it is considered taxable compensation.     So, work-related cards, prizes, and side hustle gift cards (someone can't pay you cash so they give you a gift card) are income.   That card (to a store you never heard of) from a loving relative is not taxable income.   Good luck!

@kevinigreen    Yeah.....the online program doesn't have a "Forms Mode" like the desktop software does.   They may change the Online software in the future  (next 10 years?) to make it easier...but the user would still have to pay for the software first, to see those forms.   Right now, they only allow a look at the form 1040 without paying (For the "Online'  folks)

I have Deluxe for Windows.  I started it up again this morning - no updates.  As I said, after updating yesterday, and deleting my 1099-Qs, there was still no interview process asking about qualified expenses.  I could only enter my 1099-Qs again and go to Forms to add Room and Board to the People worksheet for our student.  I'm going to give it a few hours and see if they issue another update today, otherwise I'm just going to delete the 1099-Qs again and file.  Someone said if you enter information on the Forms it prevents you from e-filing - it hasn't flagged anything yet, says I'm ready to e-file, but if I wanted to e-file with the 1099-Qs entered for sure I would print out the worksheets and the 1040 that shows our AGI and taxable income (not counting any 1099-Q income) and the refund we're due.

Good morning   Still no resolution to this issue.  I can't believe we are in the middle of February, middle of Tax filing, and the #1 tax software on the market has basic flaws like this.  Absolutely no excuse for this.  There should be no reason to start the form over, delete portions of the tax form, or even reloading the software.  Plain and simple patch should solve the issue but nothing is being offered that truly works.   Intuit Customer Support:  Are you listening?  We are switching to your competitor.  At least they address our issues in a timely fashion.

I noticed the depreciation is available in other modules, but you are correct it is not yet available in the rental section when working online with TurboTax. I believe these problems stem from last minute changes to the depreciation rules as a result of recent tax legislation. TurboTax can only work as fast as the IRS allows when there are last minute rule changes.   [Edited 2/13/26 at 6:24 AM PST] @TurboMEH7294

This did allow me to enter the RMD value again, but the calculation that turbo tax comes up with for RMD is incorrect. It would result in a tax penalty for me. I am doing the returns by hand to avoid being hit with a penalty.     I believe TurboTax is incorrectly expecting an RMD on my wife's IRA. She was not under RMD amounts in 2025. She will have to do this starting in 2026. I entered the correct amount when it asked for my IRA. That value was not used.

The 1099-Q is  only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your (or your student's) tax return. The interview is complicated and it's easy to make mistakes. Avoid it if you can.  You can just not report the 1099-Q, at all, if your student-beneficiary has sufficient educational expenses, including room & board (even if he lives at home) to cover the distribution. When the box 1 amount on form 1099-Q is fully covered by expenses, TurboTax will enter nothing about the 1099-Q on the actual tax forms. But, it will prepare a 1099-Q worksheet for your records (you don’t need it). You would still have to do the math to see if there were enough expenses left over for you to claim the tuition credit. You also cannot count expenses that were paid by tax free scholarships. References: On form 1099-Q, instructions to the recipient reads: "Nontaxable distributions from CESAs and QTPs are not required to be reported on your income tax return. You must determine the taxability of any distribution."  IRS Pub 970 states: “Generally, distributions are tax free if they aren't more than the beneficiary's AQEE for the year. Don't report tax-free distributions (including qualifying rollovers) on your tax return”. "IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education states: If the entire 1099-Q went to qualified expenses, room and board, tuition, etc; then, you do not need to enter the form."
