Attorneys employed by law firms may receive a Form 1099-MISC reporting in line 10 "gross proceeds paid to attorneys", even though these payments are paid directly to the law firm. For example, assume Attorney A is an employee of law firm L. L's clients 9 ("Claimants") who appeal SSA decision to deny them social security disability benefits, appoint A Representative to appeal these denials. A formally directs SSA to pay any attorney fees awarded by SSA regarding Claimants represented by A, directly to L via electronic deposit to L's bank account. In early 2026, A receives Form 1099-MISC for 2025 from SSA, reporting in Line 10, that SSA paid A, "Gross proceeds paid to an attorney" of $300,000. A, a salaried employee of L, files Form 1096 (Annual Summary and Transmittal of U.S. Information Returns) (effectively, a nominee information return) with IRS, attaching a Form 1099-MISC reporting in line 10 that A paid L $300,000 (Gross proceeds paid to L. A attaches a statement of explanation to A's 2025 Form 1040. Does TurboTax have any suugestions on how to input this infromation in its system? Anyone in the Community familiar with this income tax reporting situation and how best to report using TurboTax?

Thanks. I realize the return data isn't sent as an exact image of the forms. But how can someone know what exact forms & worksheet data is being transmitted? Is it safe to assume ONLY the very same 'Forms for filing' that would show up in the Print Preview/Paper Filing approach would be transmitted, or could any number of other forms & worksheet data in the Forms view possibly be transmitted as well? I *REALLY* don't feel comfortable eFiling without understanding what exactly is being sent, especially with the growing amount of blank/irrelevant forms & worksheets creeping into the Forms view the last few years...

I have a 1099-B with sections "reported to IRS", "not reported IRS" and "supplemental data" from a large brokerage company. There is RSU, ESPP, and possibly NSOs in the list. They are all long term gains. I can match up 4 of the 5 of the not reported to IRS and maybe 2 out of the 6 of the reported to IRS with the supplemental data based on number of stocks and approximate date. The rest of them are not even close to what I can find in my account history. The total proceeds are the same What path should I follow to fill in my taxes? Do I follow everything in supplemental data even though the total in wash sales, gains, etc do not match the lines in what is reported and not reported. or do I remove all the supplemental data and follow the data for the what is reported and what is not reported and attempt to fill in the basis there. The 3rd option which I tried but might try again is call the brokerage house and try to determine why there is a big difference in line items.

The upgrades were done in June of 2025 they are still valid. In 2026 the four digit QMID is going away and they are using a 17 digit pin from the product. Am I not able to delay claiming the credit until next year so that I might get to claim the entirety (qualified HVAC upgrade (qualified with QMID) + Enabling (not currently qualifying))?

@BS98282 wrote: All- I use an Avast secure browser and was advised by TT rep to try using Chrome. Instead of Chrome, today I opened TT Online using Microsoft's Bing browser. I opened TT Online, navigated to "Federal Deductions", then to the Energy Credits section. I re-entered all our responses, including "NO" on Line 25a, then ran the "Federal Review" and final review, and the software found no errors. To double check, I printed the return to pdf, navigated to Form 5695, Line 25a, and found the "NO" box checked, so I filed my return and it was accepted. I don't know if TT finally fixed the software, or if changing browsers made the difference, but either way it was accepted- FINALLY. No TT for me from here on out. Update from @BS98282 suggestions. Tried with Chrome again which still failed to fill 5695 check box 25a as NO. Same failed behavior going through the whole process again with MS's Edge browser. Still broken.

Thank you - Thank you!! Wow what frustration. Also, never had this problem before and been using TurboTax for over 20 years. Product is declining fast, especially for the cost and lack of support!

Yes, high school counts as being a full time student, for the dependent rules. May counts as a month, even if you graduated May 1st.

Yes, you would be a full time student since you were enrolled for at least one day in 5 different months.

Boxes 5, 6, and 7 in Form 1099-NEC are used to list your state tax withholding, your state name and state ID, and the total income received at that state. You should only list the state once with all the corresponding information. If you have an additional state, then you would add that state separately.
If you have amounts for the same state listed twice, then you will need to combine them. Add the state withheld and list it on Box 5 and the amount for state income on Box 7.

UPDATE: Saturday 3/7 IT FINALLY WORKED. After several frustrating days it finally worked today. In case this helps someone else I will attempt to explain what worked for me.. It did not work again in Safari so I logged in on the Chrome browser. It was still giving me an error saying that the name could not be entered directly on the state worksheet and had to only be entered on the federal worksheet (sorry, I don't recall the exact verbiage). I erased the First Name from the box of the state worksheet that kept giving the error and then this somehow this magically worked and it said the state return was ready to file. I am unsure if I would have tried this to begin with in Safari if it would have worked. Good luck!
