Al's question: What does "the after-tax deductions ($5887 total) that were collected by my employer" mean?  Answer: $5887 is the total amount of after-tax deductions that my employer withheld from my paychecks in 2025.  They collected the taxes exceeding $5250 (max tax-free).  They prepaid my taxes every quarters and then collected these taxes back from my paychecks throughout the year.  BTW, $5887 is not itemized in W-2; it's the total after-tax deductions from all paychecks.   Al's question: Is $5887 the amount of reimbursement over $5250?  Earlier you indicated the amount was $17,161.  Answer: No, $5887 is the total after-tax amount withheld from my paychecks (See above for explanation). $17,161 is the "Tuition paid to school" that is included in Box 1 of W-2 (There is also Tuition Reimbursement = $643.7, but I don't understand what this is).  However,  Full Tuition = $31,743, that would indicate the taxable amount is 31,743 - 5250 = $26,493.  That's why I'm confused on whether to enter $17,161 or $26,493 into the place "Amount reported as income on a W-2".    Al's question: Did you get $22,411 (5250 + 17,161) in tuition assistance?   Answer: No, I got 31,743 from my employer.

Hi Everyone, Could you please advise me on how to correctly report my earnings from Upside? I received five bank transactions totaling $0.31 with the description: “You just earned $… thanks to your referral using Upside.” It’s not a bonus — it’s earnings — but the amount is very small. I would like to report it in TurboTax. Could you please provide step-by-step instructions for 2025 on how to do that correctly? I did not receive any tax forms.

Hi: I am filing a return for a deceased parent where there is no will or named personal representative. This is not the final return and there is no refund or payment due for 2025. Do I need to file form 56 and request a EIN to file this return. I would also like to do this electronically through turbo tax.  Please advise. Thank you for any help.
I guess I am mistaken, if it is not eligible, then that’s fine. Wasn’t sure if my work equipment, uniforms, etc. is not eligible. I work under an employer.

Is she paying you the Fair Market Value of rent in your area?  If not, then this would be considered personal use and although the income would be reported if you are considering it rent, the expenses would not be deductible.  You would report this as "Other income"  on Schedule 1 instead of schedule E.    If she is paying the Fair Market Value for rent?  If so, then the income and expenses would be reported on Schedule E. If she gets 1 bedroom and full use of the house, then you can use the bedroom method and say she is 25% of the expenses, or you can count the number of people in the home and allocate that way.  Another method is the square footage method.  The method that you use simply needs to be reasonable. You would not be able to allocate 90% of the home expenses to her when she has 1 bedroom.  Where do I enter income and expenses from a rental property?   If on the other hand, this is simply her paying her share of the expenses, then this is considered shared expenses and it is not taxable income to you.    Also, since you are providing caregiving services to her, if part of the $1,300 is for caregiving, then this could be considered self-employment income which would need to be claimed on Schedule C.    Do be aware, that if she is paying you to live there and providing over half of her own support, you would not be able to claim her as a dependent on your return.

Georgia itemized deductions for state and local income taxes paid are still limited to the 10,000 cap, because Georgia does not automatically conform to the federal law, as a fixed-date conformity state. As of the current time, the instructions for personal income tax in Georgia still require the filer to limit their income tax deduction to a 10,000 max.

If you are using the TurboTax download/desktop, make sure that your product is up to date.  You should allow it to run updates when you open the program and it requests updates.  If you have that program open, you can run updates by clicking the word Online in the black banner near the top of the program and select "Check for updates" in the dropdown.   Next, I would recommend deleting the form for the energy credit and starting over with it.   To delete a form in the download/desktop version:   Select Forms on the blue banner near the right edge. Look for Form 5695 and click on it to highlight it. Click Delete Form at the bottom of the page under the form, then select Yes in the pop up.   To delete a form in Online TurboTax:   Click on Tax tools in the left side menu. Click on Tools, then click Delete a form in the Tools Center pop-up. Find Form 5695 in the listing of forms and click the trashcan icon to the right of it Click Yes, delete to get rid of the form. Once you've done that, go back and re-enter the information for the energy credit.  I used the information you had given in some mock tax returns in both the Online and Desktop versions of TurboTax and it correctly limited the credit to a $600 total amount.

Thanks for responding. Ok, the Schedule K-1 brings up the Schedule K-1 worksheet in Forms Mode. If fact, I don't have the Schedule K-1 in Form Mode; I have the worksheet, but not the Schedule K-1. How do I know? When I print out my Federal Tax 1040, no Schedule K-1 shows up! Schedule E, page 2 is there, and guess what that $30 dollars now shows up in Schedule B. So where is my Schedule K-1? Any clue?

Yes, this is definitely a bug.   TurboTax is not picking up beginning and ending values of the mortgages.  This information should transfer from last year's return, but it doesn't!  (Note that this info is not supplied on 1098 forms...you must get the information yourself from your mortgage company.  Box 2 of the 1098 is BEGINNING OF YEAR balance.)   I have two mortgages so this matters...one is post-10/13/1987 but pre-12/5/2017 and the other is post 12/15/2017.  (No grandfathered pre-10/13/1987)   You need to override the Deductible Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet in TurboTax.  Zoom to this worksheet and then edit the numbers by EDIT - Override.  (Or Ctrl-D).  Once you have the average balances correct, the program will figure out the limitation percentage.  (And then you can watch your refund decrease.)
That is the problem - Entering zero does not resolve the Smart Check message. I entered "1" and the message went away but I should not have to do that.
