yes or no: Can I report fed taxes paid in 2024 for my 2022 return? History: After filing, I received a late 1099(?) from a financial institution (small inheritance after my mom's death in 2022) therefore not previously reported as income on fed nor state filings

I know I need to claim the income and pay taxes on it but in filling out on turbo tax it's having me claim it as a business profit but I don't have a business so I am confused.

For a pension, it's whatever they send you. Say all of it is the RMD. If you have a RMD requirement it will ask you if it is the RMD. Say yes and enter the amount as the RMD amount. The pension doesn't need to calculate any RMD. Anything your pension pays you is considered to be the RMD. Traditional pensions automatically fulfill the rules of an RMD. So just enter the same amount in box 1 for the RMD for each 1099R.

Thanks for the reply. I am using Turbo Tax Desktop for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. (catching up on a lot!!!) The way the form printed out after the data entry was done made it appear as if the Tax ID and the EIN were two different things. I just entered the Tax ID number where the EIN entry box was and I am hoping for the best.

You don't, unless the home was a rental property. Tree removal is not tax deductible. Neither are home improvements for your personal residence.

I received a call back from support and resolved the issue. The blanks and 0s are not interpreted in the federal review properly causing the application to miscalculate the RMD distribution and taxes entrees. Resolution- Review the 1099 R entries in the Wages and Income section. Step through the questions and check amounts entered. The gross amount must be entered on the required distribution page (let's get more information about your RMD) and The entire distribution applied to the December 31, 2024 RMD. Last step is the Federal Review - the review may produce 1 issue to review which is the RMD worksheet . Carefully enter the amounts on the page to ensure the application calculates the full distribution. If you make a mistake return to the Wages and Income section and step through the wizard again. Then finish with the Federal Review. The worksheet will be presented to make the update.

The answer provided to e-file your federal return first and then file state by mail does not work. It still requires drivers license information for the state file my mail option. My wife has been hospitalized for several years with dementia and does not have a drivers license. This is reprehensible that your software is so flawed. I will switch back to H.R. Block.

I am a J1-exchange visitor (research scholar). But this (2024) is my 4th tax-year (first arrived in the US on Oct 26, 2021). And as far as understood from IRS website, J1 scholars are non-residents for their first two calendar years. But since I am here for more than 2 years, I suppose I am considered a "resident alien"? I submitted my tax return last year using TurboTax. However, my employer university has changed in 2024, and they mentioned in an email "all J-1 scholars must submit form-8843". Is that applicable to me too?

Ok, then the QBI is coming from somewhere else... Did you enter a 1099-DIV that had an amount in Box 5? If so, that amount is eligible for the qualified business income deduction. @lepurush

Just did my daughter's taxes who is a complete 1040EZ. They're trying to charge her the $29 downgraded it and now they want over $100. Then I found out she has been paying the maximum amount over the last 8 years because she thought she had to. This is insanity they've been sued before for scamming people so if you're going to be doing a lawsuit let me know I'd be happy to join in and give you all the information. She's a waitress and earns less than $18,000 a year and they want to charge her almost $300 that's insanity.
