Steam Train, Where do I enter my 2024 info manually since I am using husband's 2024 file.  He will be the primary so all of his info populates.  Where and can I do that now or do I have to wait?

First of all, Sorry you can not import  anything from the Business program to  your personal return, like a K-1.  If you buy the personal Desktop program you can use any version like Deluxe or Premier.  All the Desktop programs have the same forms.  You do get more help in the higher versions.  If you use the Online version you would need to use Premium to enter investments and a K-1.

You have a number of options.   You might be able to take control of his account by calling customer support.  You will probably have to provide some kind of documentation that you are authorized to file his final return.   It's not necessary to take control of his account if you have a copy of his 2024 return.  You can create a new account and file his 2025 return, any information that might need to carry over will be in the 2024 return.  If you don't have a copy, you might be able to get a transcript from the IRS, or again from Turbotax by calling customer support and supplying some proof.     However, be aware that each turbotax online account can only file one return for one person, and each return will have a separate fee, unless it is a simple return that qualifies for free filing.  If you need to file more than one return (such as for yourself or other family members) it is probably more cost effective to buy Turbotax as a download to install on your own computer (the desktop version), especially if you use a discount retailer like Staples or Amazon. Using the desktop program you can prepare multiple returns, and the only extra fees are state e-filing.  To prepare your father's 2025 return using the desktop program, you again may need a copy of his 2024 return (if there is anything to carry forward), which goes back to the paragraph above about how to get it if you don't already have a copy.

@SmartandConfused wrote: Assuming there are no other ways to solve this particular shortcoming of the original intent that lawmakers had?   Yeah, personally, I get hypos like this one ALL the time and the facts rarely make a lot of sense and/or would seemingly affect an infinitesimally small number of taxpayers (or perhaps even only one).   Along those lines, I would be interested in learning how it is that Steve, ostensibly, only has wage income of $25,000 for the tax year yet had a $35,000 loss due to interest and repairs on his rental property. Where did the $10,000 differential come from and how did Steve manage to live and support himself and his child with a NET $10,000 loss?    My first point is, while you may have a valid argument, the numbers don't quite make a whole lot of sense. One resolution would be to simply sell the rental properties. If Steve is underwater, he might consider a workout with the lenders or sending them the keys. Bankruptcy protection is also an option.   My second point is that the Code and Regs weren't written with someone in Steve's situation. This is not uncommon; there are quite a few examples where some taxpayers fall through the cracks.

Q. Can I use 529 funds for off campus housing up to the amount of the school's off campus cost of attendance for housing (COA)? A. Yes.    That is the exact rule: 529 money can be use for off campus living, but you are limited to the lesser of your actual costs or the school's "allowance for cost for attendance".  The student must be half time or more.

If you are a single member LLC that has not incorporated in your state, the IRS considers the LLC as a disregarded entity and you will use Schedule C to enter your business income and expenses.  The Schedule is to be included with your federal tax return, Form 1040. You will need to use the TurboTax Premium online edition for your self-employment income and expenses - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/premium/ Or you can use any of the TurboTax desktop editions - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/desktop/   If you are a multi-member LLC (Partnership), a S or C corporation, you will need to use the TurboTax Business Edition.  the Business Edition can only be installed on a personal computer, Windows or Mac.  It cannot be used for a personal tax return, Form 1040. Go to this website to purchase, download and install the Business Edition on a personal computer - https://turbotax.intuit.com/small-business-taxes/cd-download/

When using the online editions, your tax return is automatically saved as a tax data file.  There is no need to name the file since it is always available when you sign onto your online account with the same User ID you used to create the online account.   If you ever need to download the tax data file from the online account it will download with a file extension of ,taxyyyy, where yyyy is the tax year of the file, eg .tax2025 for tax year 2025.   See this TurboTax support FAQ for downloading a tax data from an online account - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/import-export-data-files/save-turbotax-online-return-tax-data-file/L4xwOG3LF_US_en_US
