The instructions for form 8962 state "Do not include the modified AGI of dependents who are filing a tax return only to claim a refund of tax withheld or estimated tax."     It does matter as it contributes to the household income figure that is used to calculate the premium tax credit (PTC) entitlement.  Generally you want your household income lower for a higher PTC entitlement.

Your ranting post makes very little sense, but I suspect that you chose to pay your TurboTax fees from your federal refund and now the refund has either been delayed or seized by the IRS for back taxes or child support you owe.  If that is what happened, the IRS will be sending you a letter to explain why your refund was offset.   If you chose to pay your fees from a federal refund, you also signed and agreed that if your refund was not issued or was delayed, that TurboTax could take its fees from your account.       TURBOTAX TOOK MONEY OUT OF MY  ACCOUNT Did you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund?  Is your refund taking an unusually long time to arrive?  Or was your refund seized to pay a debt you owed? if so, you signed an agreement that says TT can withdraw its fees from your account.  TurboTax would have sent several emails to you before they took the money out of your account.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-account-billing/bank-account-auto-debited-turbotax-fees/L3rDdVynu_US_en_US?uid=m6bdgedq   TURBOTAX SAYS: How do you justify debiting my account? The provision is spelled out in the Pay With My Refund Agreement, which you agreed to when you opted to pay with your refund. In addition, by clicking the "I Agree" button below, you electronically sign and authorize Intuit (through its third party processor) to debit the TurboTax Fees, Additional Products and Services Purchased and any applicable sales tax from your bank account number identified in the Agreement below, in the event that you do not receive a tax refund that is sufficient to pay for them.       How can I see my TurboTax  fees?      https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-account-billing/review-fees-turbotax-online/L1XnIzgzg_US_en_US?uid=m682vq7k

Hello!!  My daughter is an Illinois resident but in  2024 she had a summer job in Minnesota.  Illinois and Minnesota are NOT "reciprocal" states.  I know that my daughter files as a permanent resident of Illinois and she is filing her Illinois state return.  Here is my question:  Is she REQUIRED to file a return with Minnesota as well, or can she choose not to (if she doesn't want to try to reclaim some of the tax collected)?  Thanks so much!!

Am I understanding your situation correctly?  If I am not understanding correctly, please advise.   You are a resident of state A and you own one or more rental properties in state B, a nonresident state.  Some portion of your rental proceeds have been reported to you on an IRS form 1099-K.   If the above is correct, state B has a claim on the rental income within its borders.  State A will also claim the rental income as your resident state.  State A may allow a credit for taxes paid to another state.   You may consider reporting the IRS form 1099-K within the rental activity.  You may consider reporting under Cash, check, and electronic payments rather than Form 1099-K if you believe that the entry is disrupting your tax return.     @PhyllisRollins
Thanks, that is useful.  The DAF sponsor used the term average daily price but if that the same as Comparitive Sales with the IRS, perfect!

No. The first option is married filing separately and it may be the only option available for you.  If you lived with your husband at any time during the last six months of the year there is no other option. Single will not be allowed unless you divorce.   You can check the rules for head of household only if you did not live with your spouse at any time in the last six months AND you must be able to claim your child as a dependent. The IRS uses your prior year AGI to combat fraud.      You can find your 2023 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by: Looking at line 11 on page 1 of your 2023 Form 1040 Requesting a transcript of your 2023 tax return from the IRS. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript    Please click on this TurboTax article for more information.    Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you:  Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0.  Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A).  Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less.  Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2023 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter  0  for one of you).    Time-saving Tip: If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.    This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Have you tried deleting the entries for Box 14 that are causing the Smart Check message? If these amounts don't impact your federal or state return(s), you may not need to include that information.

I am using turbo tax to complete my 2024 tax return. I received a question regarding my 2023 HSA contributions. On December 1, 2023 I was eligible to contribute to my HSA as I had a HDHP but mid December 2023 I changed jobs and got a LDHP and no longer made HSA contributions. Turbo tax is giving me credit for my 2023 HSA contributions but also saying I will need to fill out a form 5329 for some reason. I consulted a tax pro at some company and they told me that I should not be receiving credit for my HSA contributions in 2023 on my 2024 tax returns. I cannot remove the HSA stuff from my tax. What should I do?

What did you do with the money?  Did you roll it over or did you cash it out?  If you rolled it over, then it is not taxable, however, you need to tell TurboTax that you rolled it over.  You will be be asked as you walk through the questions after entering the 1099-R what you did with the money.  Here you can answer that you rolled it over, then you will be asked additional questions and this will be removed from taxable income.   If you cashed it out, then you would be responsible for the taxes on it. If you are under 59.5, then you would also be responsible for the 10% early withdraw penalty.   Benefits paid to a spouse or former spouse. Benefits paid under a QDRO to the plan participant's spouse or former spouse must generally be included in the spouse's or former spouse's income.

I was issued the 1099 because I paid his tuition and fees, then reimbursed myself for the costs after the fact.  So I was the recipient listed on the form.    He goes to community college and lives with us, so there is no housing option. We pay all his expenses while he lives at home.  He only worked a part time job and had W-2 income of a little over 4k, and he already filed his return because kids are impatient.     So, now I just want to get my taxes filed and done with, but its so confusing and I am terrified of the IRS.
