Here's a post on the five main points on the IRS form 1098-T, that most colleges issue to their students:

IRS only started supporting it a few years ago, probably Intuit decided it's not worth the cost or priority to support it, it will be low volume. Amendments take a long time for IRS to process anyway. Neither Turbotax Online nor HR Block online support prior year returns, you have to download the software. FreeTaxUSA has a good setup for prior year filing. Good luck!

Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.
Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.
If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_...
After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.

I note that you're asking about the Lifetime Learning Credit, rather than the more generous American Opportunity Credit. See this TT support article https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/college-and-education/what-are-education-tax-credits/L7TuLrVqZ

An employer's Federal EIN would also have the format of xx-xxxxxxx if the EIN had been issued to them by the IRS.
However, their state ID number could be almost any format depending on the state. This is the number shown beside box 15 of a W-2.
If you are in a section of TurboTax and it is asking you to enter a number that will not fit in that format, be sure there is not a check-box where you can select the correct format. Some spots in the program allow you to specify either xx-xxxxxxx or xxx-xx-xxxx as the format.

The total amount of tax liability on your New Jersey return is $860 (Line 49 on Form NJ-1040NR). This amount must match the amount on your New York return. Once I made that correction on your return, the error cleared.
For step-by-step instructions on accessing that area of your New York return, please follow the instructions below:
Open your New York return.
Continue through the screens until you reach, Take a look at New York credits and taxes.
Scroll down to Taxes Paid to Another State. Click Update.
Click Edit next to New Jersey.
Enter $860 in the box next to New Jersey tax paid by you. Click Continue.
Continue through your return and your error should be cleared.

I selected download, clicked on "Continue" and a separate tab opened; put in the Acct # and Doc. ID; went through the robot process; It confirms that document was downloaded into TT, but nothing happens!! VERY FRUSTRATING!!! This is about the 5th time I've tried this!!! URGHHHH

I earned money during my undergrad internships through Americorps totaling up to $2981. I let it stay there until I was done and needed to start paying my federal loans back. In 2025 I had them transfer the total to pay towards my federal student loans. I did not recieve any of the money and they would not allow me to use that on any foundation education loans that I owed. It was not self employment. I could not use it for anything else. How do I enter it? I shouldn't have to pay income taxes on it?

Hello everyone! I have a bit of difficult issue with state taxes and getting a credit back (see subject line). I now live in North Carolina and have not lived in West Virginia since mid-December 2023. I just received form MV-1 - Motor Vehicle Property Tax Adjustment from the state of West Virginia for vehicle property taxes I paid back in 2023. West Virginia's vehicle personal property tax is two years in arrears. Since I paid these taxes and am entitled to get this money back I'm trying to determine how to claim it. I was on their website and I can claim it through their "My Taxes" portal BUT it requires a valid West Virginia driver's license (which I do not have). The other way is to file a state of West Virginia tax return but I had no income in West Virginia since 2023. So my question is can I file as a Non-Resident and claim this credit? What do I put in the income section where it asks to show my Federal AGI. Not sure how to proceed with this. For what it's worth I did email the West Virginia tax dept. and they told me I can claim this credit, but provided no information. I purchased TurboTax this year but already used the state to file my North Carolina taxes. Thanks for any information on the best way to proceed.
