This is being investigated.
This is still an issue 4 years later. I have had this problem every year for over 4 years. Why hasn't Inuit fixed it yet?
This is not a problem for this year. Are you sure that your income level allows you to take education credits?
Hey Robert, Thanks for your response.
I am filing returns for my college age children, and yes they qualify. I have had this issue with TurboTax every year for the last several years with all 3 of my kids. If you go through the questions for the education section, it doesn't ask you to enter your 1098T, it just skips it. Then when you are done, you have to go back in and edit that section to enter the 1098T. It has been a glitch for a long time in some versions of the software. The first year I filed for my oldest in their first year of college it happened and I missed it. I just thought my kid didn't qualify. We missed the credit that year and I had to file an amended return for them. The next year, I looked extra carefully to see if it was my fault, and again it wasn't there, I seriously looked hard, and went through it again and again and it wasn't there...but I knew how to get back to that section after it was complete and edit it. Now every year, with all my kids, I have had to do the work around. I just had to do it with both of my youngest kids. Thankfully, it is both of their last years in college and I won't have to worry about it again.
I just wonder how many others have had this issue? How many kids doing their own taxes have missed the credit due to it. I am a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and have used Intuit products for almost 30 years... if it caused an issue for me, it definitely will for those less experienced. So, I came here to let other's that are having the problem know, it is still an issue.
You appear to be trying to claim the education credit on the student's returns. That's basically not allowed. What you're experiencing is TT not allowing that to happen.
While technically there is a provision that allows your student-dependent to claim a federal tuition credit, from a practical matter it seldom works out. A student, under age 24, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit (AOTC) if he/she supports himself by working. She cannot be supporting herself on student loans & grants and 529 plans and parental support. It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.
If the student actually has a tax liability, there is a provision to allow him to claim a non-refundable tuition credit. But then the parent must forgo claiming the student as a dependent, and the $500 other dependent credit. The student must still indicate that he can be claimed as a dependent, on his return. This
Thanks for your response, but...Actually, I am not. My kids are 25, 27, & 29, they are not dependents, and are no longer eligible to be dependents because I no longer support them, they work and support themselves... I just happen to do their returns for them. They just took a while to get their degrees. Turbo tax knows this, because I don't claim them as dependents and I answer "no" to the question that asks if they can be claimed as dependent on someone else's return. Turbo Tax asks if they received a 1098T and when I answer yes, it just skips to the books & supplies section. Every Time. And before you ask, NO they do not make too much money to qualify for the Education Credits.
I have 40 years of accounting experience, and actually used to be an enrolled agent and prepare returns for a living. I do know what I am doing. Honest. It is a glitch in some versions of the software.
Sometimes you have to go through the education section and then select to edit the school and add the 1098-T. Go ahead and finish up with the expenses. Then follow these steps:
