It doesn't matter if you have your winnings reported on a W-2G or not, both types (with w-2g and without) get entered into the same place. Search for w-2g, use the Jump to link to be taken to the Gambling Winnings entry. When asked if you have a w-2g, answer NO. Then answer Yes when asked about other winnings - not on a w2g.
You can total your winnings, by session, and report them there. After that you will be asked about your losses (if you itemize, the entry comes from this screen). You have to total your losses, using your method, and enter the total there.
If you are using the desktop platform, you can use Forms mode to enter the total directly on the forms. Keep your documentation with your tax records. You should only provide it, if it is requested by the IRS.
Thank you @DawnC!
I was hoping to add the language "Revenue Procedure 2015-X Gambling Session Method" to the entry of of total session wins and and losses to clarify why the amount being reported doesn't match the W2G amount. I am just trying to take proactive measures to lessen the chances of being audited.
I take it there is no way to edit the language of those entries?
No, the entry must be made in this particular manner so that the income is reported on Schedule 1 line 8b and the loss can be reported on Schedule A line 16.
That's unfortunate. Seems like TurboTax needs to get their stuff together. I am pretty much guaranteed to be audited by using the software due to it not having proper functionality to handle the Session Method of reporting gambling win/loss.
