I completed and successfully submitted both the 2023 1065 and 1041 federal tax returns in 2024. I purchased the 2024 Business Desktop product and downloaded the product. When I opened it, it asked which return I wanted to start and gave me both the 1065 and 1041 return options. I selected the 1065 option and the applicable information from my 2023 return was downloaded to the 2024 return.
I had a question and wanted to check my 2023 return. When I attempted to open the 2023 return, TT stated they could not find the file and had a link to find the file. I selected the back-up pdf and got this popup:
We’re having trouble opening your file. You can try using your back-up file instead. You’ll find instructions on how to open your back-up file in the link below. Error: 102346
My Bitdefender security software will not let me connect to the link, support.turbotax.com, stating that the site is totally insecure.
I open TT and found a link that stated I "can download a PDF of last year’s return right in TurboTax". When I click on the Show Me How, it takes me to another site that states:
There are two ways to get your prior-year returns:
Neither way works to download a pdf of my prior year returns.
TT claims their products can read a pdf but won't read the one I have on my desktop. I'm very frustrated.

I called the TurboTax Customer service at the link provided. I allowed a rep to view my PC to see what I was asking to open my 2023 Desktop Business to see my 2023 1065 and 1041 tax returns.
I purchased the 2024 Business Desktop product and downloaded the product. I was asked which 2024 return I wanted to start and it gave me both the 2023 1065 and 1041 return options. I selected the 1065 option and the applicable information from my 2023 return was downloaded to the 2024 return. I completed the 2024 1065, submitted it to the IRS on 3/3/2025, and it was successfully accepted on 3/3/2025.
I then attempted to start my 2024 1041 return although our calendar year runs from 8/1/2024 to 7/31/2025. It asked me to "Choose file". I don't have a file that has designated with .tax2023 as I apparently clicked on the link for saving as a pdf instead of the one for saving with .tax2023. I choose the .pdf file I saved after submitting to IRS last August. When I then attempted to open the 2023 return, TT stated they could not find the file and had a link to find the file. I selected the back-up pdf and got this popup: "We’re having trouble opening your file. You can try using your back-up file instead. You’ll find instructions on how to open your back-up file in the link below. Error: 102345"
The agent said that error code means the 2023 Business software is corrupted and I would have to completely manually input everything for my 2024 tax returns. I had seen something that TT could download information from a pdf document from any source, such as H&R Block, Tax Act, etc. However, it will not download the information from my pdf file I saved after submitting the returns.
The error code has been around or years and I found a post from 2022 that appeared to say that undating the TT software may totally corrupt your returns. I agreed to update the 2023 software when I opened it, which appears to be a mistake after filing.
Is there any way to remove any updates done in 2025 for my 2023 completed in 2024?
Do you have TurboTax Business for tax year 2023 installed on your computer? If so, can you open the Form 1041 return for that year? If so, save that file with a new name before you try transferring the information to the 2024 version of TurboTax Business.
You might also try running a manual update for either year. Here's a link with instructions: Manually Update TurboTax Business Software (all years).
I have TT Business for tax year 2023 installed on my computer. When I previously talked to the TT rep on the phone, I had opened the Form 1041 return for 2023, which had somehow been saved with the pdf extension. I asked if it might work to save it with the tax2023 extension. She agreed and I did so. Attempting to open a return by manually both documents resulted in error codes, which the TT rep said meant either the files or the software was corrupted. She said I would have to manually input all information from my 2023 return to my 2024 return.
Using your link with instructions, I ran a manual update for 2023. It said the update was successful. I don’t know what you meant to “save that file with a new name before you try transferring the information to the 2024 version of TurboTax Business.” Since I had two files with different names, I then attempted to continue my 2023 Form 1041, first using the pdf extension, which again resulted in the error code 102346, and second, using the tax2023 extension, which again resulted in the error code 102345.
As I had stated before, I completed and successfully submitted both the 2023 1065 and 1041 federal tax returns in 2024 using the 2023 TT Business installed on my laptop. When I downloaded the 2024 TT Business installed on my laptop, it asked which return I wanted to start and gave me both the 1065 and 1041 return options from 2023. I selected the 1065 option, which is due in March 2025, and all of the applicable information from my 2023 return was downloaded to the 2024 return. I completed and successfully submitted my 2024 1065 federal tax return.
When I attempted to start my 1041 tax return on my 2024 TT Business installed on my laptop, it no longer gives me the 1041 return options from 2023. I apparently have to manually re-input all information from my 2023 return to my 2024 return.
It is frustrating since, in my opinion, the issue with the file or software corruption occurred when I agreed to update the 2023 TT Business when I opened it. It is my opinion that I would have been given the 1041 return option from my 2023 return and all of the applicable information from my 2023 return would have been downloaded to the 2024 return if I had not updated the 2023 TT Business.
You can't open a pdf file in the program. You need the file ending in .tax2023 to open in the 2023 program. Can you find those files? If it transferred into 2024 ok they should be on your computer. They should be in your Documents then in a Turbo Tax folder. Or search your whole computer for all files ending in .tax or .tax2023. By the way the Business files and y our personal return files end in the same .taxyyyy. So you have to know which kind it is. It usually says in the name of the file.
If you don't have the main .tax file you might have one that starts with a Tilde sign ~ like "~your name.tax2023". That file is if your computer crashes or your real file gets lost or deleted or corrupt so you can restore it.
If you can open a 2023 tax return you can save it with a new name, go up to FILE-Save As and give it a name you will know and where it is.
I do not believe I ever had files ending in .tax2023 for either the 2023 1065 or the 1041 tax returns that were completed in the 2023 Business program. I have done a search of all my files and only my personal 1040 return shows up with a file ending in .tax2023.
When I downloaded the 2024 TT Business on my laptop, it asked which return I wanted to start and gave me both the 1065 and 1041 return options from 2023. I did not notice if either file ended in .tax2023. I selected the 1065 option, which is due in March 2025, and all of the applicable information from my 2023 return was downloaded to the 2024 return. I completed and successfully submitted my 2024 1065 federal tax return.
When I attempted to start my 2024 1041 tax return, my 2024 TT Business program no longer gives me the 1041 return options from 2023. In my opinion, the issue with the file or software corruption occurred when I agreed to update the 2023 TT Business when I opened it. In my opinion, if I had not updated the 2023 Business, I would have been given the 1041 return option from my 2023 return and all of the applicable information from my 2023 return would have been downloaded to the 2024 return.
Is it possible the 2025 update of the 2023 Business somehow deleted the files ending in .tax2023 for both the 2023 1065 and 1041 files? That doesn't seem possible but...
