You can contact TurboTax Live and an agent can look at your return with you to resolve the issue or you can delete the form 1099-R from your return and enter the information again.

If you do not understand why there is an error by deleting the form and putting in the information again it may resolve the issue.

I've seen this issue before. The only way I've ever seen it dealt with successfully is if you completely delete the 1099-R from the program, then finish working through the section and clicking the DONE button to be returned to the master income screen. Then elect to start/update the rentirement income section again and enter the 1099-R anew.

Glad it worked for some. But I have tried this multiple times for the FIVE 1099-Rs I have. Same error every time keeps tripping on 2 of the 5 forms. Multiple calls to Intuit and no help. Same advice over and over, delete the forms and re-enter. This is becoming absurd not to mention exceptionally time consuming. Thoughts? I'm close to abandoning TurboTax after over a decade of use.

I am just taking a guess here, but does your 1099-R have anything to do with a RMD?   If so, please delete and follow the instructions below.  If not, comment back with more details on the 1099-R and associated error messages so we can try to get this fixed for you.

Since RMDs were waived for 2020, no part of the distribution was actually an RMD even though it was taken with the intention of satisfying an RMD.  In TurboTax, indicate that the distribution was not an RMD.    And were any of these covid-related?   @Anonymous

I have 5 1099-Rs:

- 2 x Traditional IRAs funded pre 2020 whose 'Total Distribution' was converted through a back door to Roth IRAs (one for me and one for my spouse): $0 taxable amount; Taxable Amount Not Determined NOT checked; Total Distribution checked; Code G; IRA/SEP/SIMPLE checked

*** I think it is these two above that are tripping the error but it is unclear ***

- 2 X Traditional IRAs funded in 2020 whose 'Total Distribution' was converted through a back door to Roth IRAs (one for me and one for my spouse): Full Amount is taxable; Taxable Amount Not Determined checked; Total Distribution checked; Code 2; IRA/SEP/SIMPLE checked

- 1 X 401K Mega Conversion: Taxable Amount is partial of the full distribution; Taxable Amount Not Determined NOT checked; Total Distribution NOT checked; Code G; IRA/SEP/SIMPLE NOT checked

The Error Message I get for 2 of the above forms is:

Form 1099-R (National Financial Serevices LLC): Full Roth conversion box should not be checked unless there is an amount on line B4, the amount that potentially could be converted to a Roth IRA.

A backdoor Roth IRA allows you to get around income limits by converting a Traditional IRA into a Roth IRA. Contributing directly to a Roth IRA is restricted if your income is beyond certain limits, but there are no income limits for conversions.  In TurboTax, entering a backdoor Roth conversion is a two step process.  Check to make sure that you have followed the steps below, to take care of any errors.

Step 1:  Enter the Non-Deductible Contribution to a Traditional IRA

  1. Open your return if it’s not already open.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for ira contributions and select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Select Traditional IRA on the Traditional IRA and Roth IRA screen and Continue.
  4. Answer Yes to Did you Contribute To a Traditional IRA?
  5. Answer No to Is This a Repayment of a Retirement Distribution?
  6. On the Tell Us How Much You Contributed screen, enter the amount contributed and continue.
  7. Answer No on the Did You Change Your Mind?
  8. Depending on your situation, answer the remaining questions.

Step 2:  Enter the Conversion from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA

  1. Inside TurboTax, search for 1099-r and select the Jump to link in the search results.
  2. Answer Yes on the Your 1099-R screen and continue.
    • If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen, select Add Another 1099-R.
  3. Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and follow the instructions.
  4. Answer No to Did You Inherit the IRA from (payer)?
  5. Answer I moved the money to another retirement account (or returned it to the same retirement account) on the What Did You Do With The Money From (payer)?
  6. Next, choose I converted all of this money to a Roth IRA account.
  7. Continue answering questions until you come to the Your 1099-R Entries screen.

To check the results of your backdoor Roth IRA conversion, see your Form 1040:

  1. On the left side of your screen, select Tax Tools, then Tools.
  2. Under Tool Center, select View Tax Summary.
  3. On the left side of your screen, select Preview my 1040.
    • Your backdoor Roth IRA amount should be listed on 1040 Postcard, Line 4  as IRA distributions.
    • Taxable amount should be zero unless you had earnings between the time you contributed to your Traditional IRA and the time your converted it to Roth IRA, then the earnings would be taxable.
    • Schedule 1, Line 32 IRA deduction, should be blank.
  4. Select Back on the left side of your screen to return to where you left off in TurboTax.

Turbo Tax has a problem with Form 1099-R concerning New York State withholding. It is a TurboTax problem. I don't think I should have to pay. Turbo Tax needs to fix this error.

My guess is that there is no amount in box 16 (state distribution).   Use the same amount you see in Box 1 and Box 2 (prob the same amounts) and that might solve the issue.  If boxes 1 and 2 are different, I would use Box 2
