I have a NR4 with code 09. How do I enter this in Turbo Tax?

You can use these steps below to enter the NR4. Make sure to follow the steps exactly.

NOTE: Make sure you convert the Canadian currency to USD before you enter it into TurboTax.

  • Log into your account and click Take me to my return
  • Click Federal to the left and Wages & Income at the top
  • Scroll down to Interest and Dividends section and click Show More
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Dividends on 1099-DIV
  • Answer Yes on screen asking Did you receive any dividend income?
  • Choose I’ll type it in myself on next screen
  • Then on Let’s get the details from your 1099-DIV screen, enter the information there. Box numbers may be a different but titles should be similar so you know where to enter what data
    • If you have more boxes than you see listed, click to put a check in the box next to the statement My form has info in more than just these boxes (this is uncommon). and that will expand more fields to input data into.
Once you have entered that, follow these steps next:

  • Click Federal to the left and Deductions & Credits at the top
  • Scroll down to the Estimates and Other Taxes Paid section and click Show More
  • Then click Start/Revisit next to Foreign Taxes there and go through and answer those questions about foreign taxes paid to Canada on your NR4.

I have a NR4 with code 09. How do I enter this in Turbo Tax?

It asks for the FEIN #  ... It is foreign (Canada) and there isn't one.  When the system checks for issues at the end, it brings this up as an item that needs to be reviewed.

I have a NR4 with code 09. How do I enter this in Turbo Tax?

Your steps did not help me at all. Followed all your steps; however,  I do not have any of the Box numbers that come up in TurboTax.  On my NR4 Computershare form, the only boxes I have dollars are Box 16 Gross Income and Box 17 Non-resident tax withheld.  I haven't a clue where to enter this information.  And, this is in Line 1: Box 14, Income Code 09.  WHERE DO I ENTER THIS IN TURBOTAX?

Hello pmissabe,

Did you ever get a response to your question below and did you ever figure out how to report the Canadian NR4 code 09?  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

@sam_khader  Code 9 is for foreign dividends.  First, convert the Canadian dollars to US dollars.

Then go to the "Wages and Income" section and open a form 1099-DIV and follow the instructions.

Then - if you have paid any foreign taxes on the dividends - enter 'foreign tax credit' in the search box and then click the 'jump to' button.  Follow the instructions.

Finally found a satisfactory answer from the community -

To report foreign dividend income (including your foreign tax credit) -

To enter interest income in TurboTax, log into your tax return (for TurboTax Online sign-in, click Here and click on "Take me to my return") type "1099div" in the search bar then select "jump to 1099div". TurboTax will guide you in entering this information.

  1. Choose “ Dividends on 1099-DIV” and select “start’
  2. Select "I'll type it in myself"
  3. Enter the name of the brokerage firm/foreign corporation and the amount (in USD) in box 1a (You will need to check if your foreign dividends are considered qualified dividends).
  4. Check the box "My form has info in more than just box 1 (this is uncommon)".
  5. Enter any Foreign taxes paid in Box 6.

Thank you for responding. I still think it is quite confusing due to the different names given to these boxes in 1099 DIV and NR4. I just entered the amount of dividend income as if an US source income, and then entered the foreign tax withholding.
