If you are speaking of subtractions to income, TurboTax will automatically populate Maryland's Form 502SU based on your entries.
If there are subtractions from your federal income to derive your Maryland income, this will be reported in different areas of your return, depending on what the subtraction is.
If you give us more information, we can help guide you to the correct place on your return to report the subtraction to income. If you are not speaking about the Maryland 502SU at all, but a different form, then let us know which form you are trying to fill out.
I am speaking of the Maryland Tax Income Tax Subtraction Modification (Form 502 and reported via 502SU under "va". It is a subtraction of $6,500 for FY21.
The mileage for volunteer service auto populated, but I could not put in this form for the additional information.
On your Maryland state return, you will come to Here's the income that Maryland handles differently screen. Scroll down to Public Service about 2/3 of the way down and click Start next to Fire, Rescue or Emergency Medical Services Volunteer Work.
Certified active volunteers receive a $6,500 subtraction to Maryland income. You may need to mail your Maryland return as it does state that a copy of the certification must be attached to your state return.
There does not appear to be a way to enter the subtraction as shown on Maryland 2021 form 502su line item "u. Military Retirement Income." Please advise
Up to $5,000 of military retirement income is excludable from your Maryland taxable income. To report this subtraction in TurboTax, enter Form 1099-R in Federal > Wages & Income > Retirement Plans & Social Security > IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R). After entering it, TurboTax will ask Where is your distribution from? Answer Active or reserve military retirement. This will apply the subtraction to your Maryland income.
I just recently ran into the same problem regarding the Maryland 502SU form. Not sure where some people are talking about a “Where does this come from?” screen, because my version did not ask this.
A representative from the helpdesk assisted me by getting me to generate the form and manually enter the information. Here’s what they had me do:
1. Switch to "Forms Mode” (Upper right of the screen, icon looks like a document)
2. On the left menu, scroll down to “Form 502” and left click.
3. On the main window, scroll down to Line 13 of the MD 502 form. Click your cursor on the (hopefully) empty line and then move it over to just slightly to the beginning / left of the line. An icon that looks like a magnifying glass should appear and a dialog box stating “goto support form” should appear. If you left click the icon and you haven’t had the form created yet (as in my case), it will auto-generate the form. This will appear as a new selection in the left menu labeled “Form 502SU”.
4. On the left menu, scroll down and find “Form 502SU” and left click.
5. Enter the corresponding information for the correct line. This should work for other deductions that haven’t tripped the generation of the MD 502SU form. I clicked on Line u, entered the corresponding amount, and the program correctly auto-generated the rest and recalculated the taxes correctly, apparently.
While I was quite wary, the program did its normal review and found no errors. Hope this helps!
I cannot find any link in Turbo Tax Maryland state to enter paragraph (u) Military Retire Deduction on form 502SU

The program does not automatically generate MD Form 502SU and, although I have been able to manually create it, the program does not let me enter any data on the lines in the form. Specifically, I am trying to enter the amount of a pickup contribution on line r of Form 502SU and on line 13 of Form 502. Neither Form allows me to enter a figure on those lines. I already entered the pickup contribution on line 19 of my Form 1099-R in the Federal section of the program, but again, that doesn't cause Form 502SU to be generated or line 13 of Form 502 to be automatically populated. How do I enter the pickup contribution on Forms 502 and 502SU? I am using TT Advantage Premier for Windows CD if that matters.
I’m assuming you are using TurboTax CD/Download since you say you were able to manually create Maryland Form 502SU.
Here's how to enter your pickup contribution:
What if that didn't work?
The first solution does not work, and that's the problem. I had done that already but tried it again anyway. It does not result in populating line r on Form 502SU or line 13 on Form 502. The second solution also does not work. Although I am able to type in the amount of my pickup contribution in the pickup contribution worksheet, that figure does not carry over to line r on Form 502SU or to line 13 of Form 502, and I am not able to type in a number in those lines directly. There still remains a disconnect in the program preventing me from correctly completing my forms.
Entering the pickup contribution in Box 19 or on the worksheet is carrying correctly to the right place on Form 502 on my return so I am not sure what's not working with you.
If those solutions do not work, you can override Form 502 line 13 and enter the amount. This will prevent you from e-filing your Maryland return and void the TurboTax 100% Accurate Calculation Guarantee.
To override a field see How do I override (replace) an amount calculated by TurboTax?
It is not doing that in my program. Adding the pickup contribution in box 19 of the 1099-R or in the pickup contribution smart worksheet in Form 502SU does not result in the entry being carried over to line r of Form 502SU or line 13 of Form 502. So the question is why does that work in your program but not in mine. One possibility may be that my Form 1099-R in the program has an incorrect designation for box 19. The title of box 19 in the program is "Local distribution," which is wrong; it should be "Pickup contribution." I've been uploading the updates but was there an update that fixed this problem? I'm wondering if that's the reason the numbers are not carrying over. But I need an escalation of my problem. It cannot be that the only solution is to file my taxes myself and not get the program I paid for. I am not trying to override a TurboTax entry; I'm trying to make an entry that TurboTax will not make itself and not allow me to make directly. Turbotax needs to fix this for me. Please escalate this issue.
It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2022" file that is experiencing this issue.
You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
Go to the black panel on the top of your screen and select Online.
We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
