If you filed your 2020 federal tax return on or after 03/26/2021 the exclusion will be calculated on your tax return.
The exclusion is reported on Schedule 1 Line 8 as a negative number. The unemployment compensation received is on Line 7 of Schedule 1. The result flows to Form 1040 Line 8.
If you filed your tax return before 03/26/2021 there is nothing you need to do. The IRS is calculating the tax refunds for the unemployment compensation exclusion for those eligible. The IRS started issuing the refunds in May and will continue issuing refunds throughout the summer months.

You will see it on Schedule 1 on lines 7 and 8. If you are preparing your return now, the software will take care of it automatically. All you need to do is enter your 1099G as it appears. The software does the calculations for how much of it is taxable--not you.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
You will have to enter a 1099G that is issued by your state.
Some states will mail out the 1099G. Or you might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.
Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment
Go through the screens very carefully, making sure to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment.
