That is an unusual credit to have ... look at the Sch 3 line 6 ... do you have an amount on that line? Did you have the proper paperwork to claim that credit ?
Thanks for the reply! Yes - I have an FHA loan that allows me to reclaim 20% of all interest paid on my mortgage. And yes.. the return I download from TT has it in there, but the IRS assured me that it is not in the return they received… after lots of arguing!
I’ve claimed this ‘rebate’ since 2015, and it is what kept me from refinancing with the crazy low rates last year.
The major problem seems to be a discrepancy in the paperwork on my side of TT and what the IRS received.
Ok ... if you have it and they don't then is it possible you made changes to the return AFTER you efiled the return? Maybe while it was pending ? If so that would explain a lot ... once the return is sent no changes are forwarded to the IRS.
Did you mail in the return ? If so the data input operator could have missed a line ... a common error.
No matter why things are different the fix is simple ... amend the return. First you need to make the return look like the one the IRS has then start the amendment process and put the credit back. Print, ink sign and mail it in.
See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to amend a tax return originally completed and filed using TurboTax - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-to-amend-change-or-correct-a-return-you-already-...
Thanks so much for the continued responses...
funny thing is that I did nothing to the return... simply filed with TT and hit submit - it was a surprise to me when IRS said they had no form 8936 (which is bit longer of a story, but I figured that out i conversations with TT and IRS. but... the tax document that I can download from TT clearly shows the form.
The frustrating thing is that now, I have to figure out this 1040-X (what in the world is a non-refundable credit?? - asking rhetorically).
Kind of asking here on this forum to raise attention and see if I can at least get a refund from TT for my fee from last year - anyway, its probably futile, but every time I spend 30 minutes trying to figure out the 1040-X, I get annoyed that the reason I pay TT is so that I don't have to spend my time figuring this out...
(sorry vented a little there!)
Thanks again - Parrish
Download the amendment program and the .taxfile from the online system.
Open the return and Switch to the FORMS mode .. if a 1040X is in the list of forms on the left click on it and delete it.
Look at the 1040. Does it have the credit on it?
If so switch back to the step by step mode & remove the credit in question.
(If not continue to next step)
Then start the amendment process ... it is under the other tax situations tab.
And then add the credit back ... then switch to the FORMS mode and review the 1040X.
If needed ... adjust line 16 or 18 in the FORMS mode to reflect the refund the IRS did send or the payment you did make on the original return.
Look at the form 1040X …
Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.
If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:
On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.
On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received. If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it. If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.
Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
