The bank account to have direct deposit must have both you and your spouse names on the account correct?

A joint refund will go into an account with one name. My married sister does it every year.

Not necessarily true - while the IRS allows it, each bank has its own policy as to whether it will accept a direct deposit into an individual account that is made payable to the joint filers.

See we are filing together but do not have a joint bank account.. Would we have to have a joint bank account to do direct deposit.

You can ask the IRS to direct deposit a refund on a joint return into your account, your spouse’s account, or a joint account. However, state and financial institution rules can vary and you should first verify your financial institution will accept a joint refund into an individual account if that is what you need to do.
