"Your 2023 tax return is not processed"

"Your 2023 tax return is not processed", says the IRS website.

I had extension (until Oct 15) this year and filed by paper. USPS tracking confirmed delivery on Sep 10, 2024. It's been exactly 6 weeks since, which is the how long the payment usually takes according to IRS, and I would assume the information to enter their system even sooner.

Should I take any action? Thanks!

    No--keep waiting.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

    To track your state refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

I just found out today that my taxes, both federal & state were NEVER PROCESSED even though I pad $193 to have them done.

Now, I owe the IRS and will probably owe my state as well. I don't know what to do from here. I feel so cheated by Intuit. They took my money byt never processed my taxes.

    I'm at a loss here.

    @Bett22

Paying your TurboTax fees did not file your returns.  Did you go all the way through the FILE section and e-file?

Did you e-file?  Did you click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

    https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here?

    https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Or does your account say “Ready to Mail?”

Note:  If it says “Ready to Mail” or “Printed” that means YOU have to mail it yourself.  TurboTax does not mail your tax return for you.

If in fact you did not e-file successfully, then you now need to print, sign and mail your tax return, which is late.   The IRS will bill you for any late filing penalty or interest owed.    E-filing closed permanently for 2023 returns after October 15.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Thaank you for your quick response.

I don't even remember because it was in July when submitted my taxes and I was in a car accident like a day or two later.  When September passed and I never received a state refund, I went sleuthing. And here I am.

I apparently missed that. But efile details do say that they were received and accepted by the IRS, but I've received a bill since then. but never the small refund from my state taxes that were received and accepted.

As of right now, neither was has been processed, so I am late in filing and don't know what to do from here.
