Wrong Refund Amounts

I filed on January 31, 2022 for my 2021 return. Both federal and state were both accepted almost immediately. I was given the amount of $10,665 for my federal return, my refund was deposited into my account as only $4,665. I had the deluxe package where a "tax expert" reviewed it and nothing was noted as incorrect. I have filed for the past several years with Turbo Tax having no issues but this is a huge difference in these amounts. I am demanding to know why either Turbo Tax messed up the amounts or if my refund was not fully given to me. I can't get through to customer service whatsoever so this is the only option I could find to resolve this.

Wrong Refund Amounts

What amount is shown on the IRS website as being sent - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Go to this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Why is my refund different than the amount on the tax return I filed?

All or part of your refund may have been used (offset) to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.

We also may have changed your refund amount because we made changes to your tax return. This may include corrections to any incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount. You’ll get a notice explaining the changes. Where’s My Refund? will reflect the reasons for the refund offset when it relates to a change in your tax return.

Tax Topic 203, Refund Offsets for Unpaid Child Support, Certain Federal and State Debts, and Unemplo... has more information about refund offsets.

Wrong Refund Amounts

There could be a few reasons why your refund was less than expected, however, TurboTax does not hold your refund payment.  The IRS could have issued an offset or a correction. For more details on this, please see the Help Article for further assistance.

Wrong Refund Amounts

We just looked at our bank account and our refund from state is about half of what it should be. We paid significant amounts in Federal and another state. We are waiting for a letter of explanation from the state, but we also upgraded to expert advice and feel a little jaded right now that it was inaccurate. We don't owe anything to the state like child support. We've been customers for ten years, but I'm already thinking ahead to next year. What is the point of paying for all this expert advice if it turns out to be wrong- and we have no help when this happens.

Until you get the notice and know what the state disallowed or changed you will not know what step needs to be taken next.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this ? The same thing happened to me and my wife. She used turbo tax last year and they have her an almost $14,000 refund amount. The irs letter they mail you has the same refund amount. Then she ended up only receiving around $8500 in to our account. We’re also not sure what to do. Can’t get thru to the irs.  Now this tax year her job only withheld $300 in federal, even though nothing has changed and we can’t figure out why. We’re Not sure if the 2 are related.

Is the amount sent/issued by the IRS the same as the refund amount shown on your federal tax return Form 1040 Line 35a? - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

If not, then go to this IRS website for information on reduced refunds - https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc203

Are you also receiving a state tax refund? If so, the state refund is sent directly to you based on how you chose to receive the state tax refund, it does not go through the third party processor.
Use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

Have you factored in the TurboTax account fees and the TPG service charge of $40 plus any applicable sales tax?
Review your TurboTax account fees -
Sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on View Order Details

If you requested to have the TurboTax account fees deducted from your federal tax refund, the IRS will send the refund to a third party processor to have the fees and the service charge deducted. The third party processor will deduct the TurboTax fees plus the service charge and then attempt to direct deposit the remaining refund balance into the account that you entered on your tax return.

For the status of your tax refund you will need to contact the third party processor, Santa Barbara Tax Product Group, using their website - https://www.sbtpg.com/
