Will a processed amended return make you eligible for the stimulus checks?

My boyfriend filed his 2019 taxes but he marked the box “someone can claim as a dependent” by accident. Because of it, he wasn’t eligible for the stimulus check. However, it was a mistake and, in fact, no one ended up claiming him. He filed an amended return back in April (which still hasn’t been processed), and now we’re trying to figure out whether or not his eligibility for the stimulus check (or at least the second one, if there’s any) will change. His change was from dependent to independent. He really needs the money and we don’t know who to ask for help. We called the IRS but they said they didn’t know whether the 1040X would make a difference. Will he become eligible for either or both stimulus checks once his amended return is processed?

He is only eligible for one stimulus check (unless, of course, congress gives us another).  If he doesn’t get one before filing his 2020 return he can claim it on that return.  If he happens to get 2 checks he should return one of them.

As an aside, he is not eligible for a stimulus check if anyone CAN claim him as a dependent even if that person did not claim him.

It is taking the IRS about six months to process amended tax returns.  Your BF's amended return might still be in a pile of unopened mail.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check this year, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021—if you are eligible. It will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.
