Hi,
While filing my 2021 tax return through Turbotax online, I followed the instruction to update personal/family info to add my child born in November 2021. Since I didn't claim the advance payment and receive a 6419 letter, I expected to receive the $3,600 credit along with my Federal refund. However, I didn't so I double checked the form 8812 that Turbotax filed on my behalf and found line 4a in Form 8812 shows 0 number of qualifying children under 18 with the required social security number. It isn't what I provided while filling out my info. Please advise what I should do to get this corrected to receive the additional child tax credit - $3,600.
Thanks,
Yan

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2021make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.
Take a closer look at your Form 1040. Do you see the $3600 on line 28? THAT is where you will find your 2021 child tax credit ---and then it calculates down to the refund you see on line 35a or helps to pay tax you owe from the credit.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
And....for a child born in 2021 you should also be seeing the $1400 3rd EIP payment as a recovery rebate credit on line 30.
I don't see the $3600 child tax credit included on the line 28 in Form 1040 but do see the $1,400 recovery rebate credit on line 30. So I'm confused. Unfortunately, I already filed the 2021 returns. Could you please advise if I should amend my whole federal return package or just the form 8812? Thank you!
Which box is checked at the top of 1040 for your child? If the Child Tax Credit box isn't checked you answered something wrong.
I see. Instead of Child Tax Credit, Credit for other dependents was checked. In this case, I have to amend my return, right?
Yes----if that box for child tax credit is not checked then you made a mistake somewhere. You will have to be very careful when you amend. You must enter the children's dates of birth correctly, enter their Social Security numbers----and make sure you do NOT say their SSN's say "not valid for employment". When it asks if they paid for over half their own support say NO. Be careful when you answer how long they lived with you in 2021. It has be for at LEAST half the year. The first choice in the menu is "whole year." If your child was born in 2021 choose WHOLE YEAR.
