I received a CP301 from IRS. What is this and do I need to do anything?

I did request the activation letter

it came today

i followed the directions within the letter  to a T

I never , ever was allowed to get to a page that simply had me enter the verification/activation code that my Govt agency spent time , money and effort to snail mail to me

in trying to resolve this ridiculous conundrum, I found many online who are stuck in the exact same unresolving loop

You're right. I am trying to remember,  I had to help a family member get to it. I think he was clicking on a different link from what he had been trying to get originally. Try them all here.

Good luck!

You only need the activation code if the software requests it during installation or anytime after.  I recommend that you keep it handy along with the tax year information.

This letter was sent to confirm that you registered for an IRS Online Service.

Common online services with the IRS include:

For more information, see: Understanding Your CP301 Notice.

If it has been longer than 21 days since you have filed and the return has only been accepted (received) and not approved, see this TurboTax articles for more reasons and what you can do:

Why do some refunds take longer than others?

Yeah I received my code in the mail also but it really doesn't help when they don't explain to you where you're supposed to put it in at because I've been looking since I got this letter in the mail and I have still yet to identify my identity because I don't know where to put it

@ken94 Not sure if your post is related to the issue in this thread.   You do not mention anything about trying to use any online account services with the IRS.   If you are saying only that your e-file was rejected and that you had to file by mail:

MAILED RETURNS

Per the IRS:

COVID-19 Mail Processing Delays

It’s taking us longer to process mailed documents including:

  • Paper tax returns, and
  • All tax return related correspondence.

We are processing all mail in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or call the IRS.

It can take 3-4 weeks  (or a LOT longer since the IRS is severely backlogged) for anything to show up on the IRS site when you mail a tax return.  Expect at least 6-8 weeks for complete processing of a mailed return and probably  MUCH MUCH longer.

If  you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

State returns have to be mailed to the state.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

If you are wondering if you should send your return again——the IRS does not want you to file a second time.   Putting two tax returns into the system at the same time can lead to confusion and even more delays.   If you did not use tracking and do not know if the return was received—-you have to make your own judgement call and decide if you want to risk further delay by sending the return again.

OR-----did you try to use an account online with the IRS and get a  CP301 letter about it from the IRS?   That is what this thread was about.

I received this letter CP301 and don't know what my next step is.  I have sent emails, made phone calls and get no results.  I believe this is a matter of stolen identity.  I received my first stimulus check, and have not received any more, I do believe I am eligible for several more.
