My tax return was 3200 less than what it should have been unpaid offset?

Me and my husband filed out taxes and they said we had an unpaid offset of child support which we do not have they took 3200 of out tax return for said offset and want to know how we go about getting this money. We spoke to the IRS and actually got through they told us to speak to the treasury of offsets to find out where this offset came from. We could not get through to a live person. The prompt said we should have received something in the mail regarding our offset and who we owe the money too. We never received any documentation regarding any unpaid child support or any type of offset of who we owe the money too. We do not owe any child support and would like our full refund amount.

The letter explaining the offset may take 3-4 weeks to get to you. TurboTax can’t help you to find out what the offset is.

In this public forum, we cannot diagnose why your refund has been reduced.  For additional information, please see this TurboTax help article: Why is my refund direct-deposit or check lower than the amount in TurboTax?

I understand that. The article you have attached does not help because we do not have an offset. We have tried to contact the IRS as well as the Bureau of offsets. I have spoken to numerous other people who this has happened to and I am seeking help. There is no unpaid child support. Anyone who I speak with just pushes me off to another agency or another phone number where we are able to speak to a live person. I'd liked to settle this and I am aware of other people reaching out through this forum for answers.

@Jackson514 Does the IRS website indicate that you were sent less than what was reported on your federal tax return Form 1040 Line 34? - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

@DoninGA Yes, and it states that it is due to a child support offset which we don't have. My husband has children from a previous marriage but 1. He has never missed a payment and 2. There is no court order and the courts are not involved nor have ever been involved in his child support agreement.

You will need to wait for the IRS to send you a letter which will have the changes the IRS made to the return which changed the refund. If you disagree with the IRS there will be a procedure in the letter to dispute the IRS changes.

Assume that you have already tried BFS at 1-800-304-3107

@DoninGA I have called both the IRS I spoke to someone at the IRS after being on hold for an hour and half. All they did was tell me to call BFS. BFS was just an automated system. I cannot get through to anyone nor can I get any information from them from the automated system.

@Jackson514 Wish I could be more of a help.  All we can do is give you the information available on the IRS website.

This is the IRS Tax Topic for reduced refunds but it probably has information you have already discovered - https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc203
