The IRS has denied my refund, in fact, they have made a $50000. swing! I found this out by looking for the status of my refund on their site. I am still waiting for their letter.
From the details, they say the problem is related to Child Tax credit "inaccuracy"! They specifically quote schedule 8812 Credits for qualifying children or dependents. I have no qualifying children or dependents, there are no dependents claimed in the return. TT has placed a number on that schedule for Child Tax Credit. The number matches the amount we received in stimulus checks.
In preparation for the discussion with IRS, I wonder if you can tell me where in the interview that number came from, please.

TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS when they change your refund. Since there seems to be some mixup involving form 8812 and the stimulus, I wonder if you entered something incorrectly for the stimulus or child tax credit. Lots of people have been very confused and have made mistakes. Letter 6419 was sent to people who received advance child tax credit payments between July and December. The amount received was supposed to be entered for the child tax credit and form 8812. Some people got confused and entered stimulus amounts there----did you do that?
Letter 6475 was sent to people who received stimulus checks of $1400 per person for the 3rd EIP payment. You were supposed to enter the amount of your 3rd EIP payment in Federal Review for the recovery rebate credit. If you did not enter it correctly, you could have ended up with an amount on line 30 of your Form 1040 that you really should not be getting again.
Your letter from the IRS will explain further. Meanwhile, check your IRS online account for more information on how much the IRS says you received for the stimulus checks. You said "we" -- so if you filed a joint return check accounts for each of your Social Security numbers.

Could you have confused the questions for the stimulus and child tax credits, which are two different provisions?
I think that is probably what happened. I assume I will have to file an amendment, but I am not sure how to do so. Since I made the error when going through the interview, how do I correct it when going through an amendment?
You don't need to amend for that. The IRS already adjusted your return. Amending won't change what you now owe. Or do you also need to amend for something else?
Thanks for the reply. I am sure that is the error I made. I assume I will have to file an amendment to correct it. Can you advise how I use TT to make the amendment, please?
Maybe it would be enough to just tell me which form the stimulus payment should be input on?
Thanks for the help.
No, I have no other reason to amend.
What I have to argue with the IRS about is the amount it calculates for my tax. I mentioned in the original question that it is a $50000. swing! I see no way that kind of error could affect m tax as much!
I think the process is for me to receive a letter, which was apparently dated April 18th and which still has not arrived. The letter will provide me with a phone contact.
A FIFTY THOUSAND 50,000 dollar swing? Or maybe just 5,000?
I have had my letter today and things become a little clearer! It is approximately $50000. and the reason is that I originally sent in a pre-payment check in the first quarter because I had sold a rental property. After a while they sent me a check for that amount with no explanation. I sent it back to them with an explanation of why. I sent it insured and the USPS confirmed it was delivered. It is this prepayment they have ignored! None of that info appeared on the details from their website!
Hopefully when I can get them on the phone this will be easily resolved.
Thanks for all the help and I am sorry for the confusion.
you should see a deadline date on your letter by which time you can appeal the adjustment without paying now.
You would have a case, since you already paid, twice.
