Please check line 30 of your Form 1040 if you claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit for the missing first and second stimulus payments. The Recovery Rebate Credit will be included in your total refund on line 34.

If you have already filed your return but forgot to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, then you have to file an amended return (1040X) to make changes. But you might want to wait until your refund or payment is processed. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail. Please see How to amend a tax return for instructions.

To claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax.
  2. After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen (or click "Search" and type "Stimulus" and follow the jump to link).
  3. On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.  If you did not receive a payment enter "0".
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

To be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit you need to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020 and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.

You cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else to be eligible.

Your credit amount will be reduced if your 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.

Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above. (IRS FAQ Recovery Rebate Credit )

If you did not receive the 1st and/or 2nd EIP payment you need to file a 2020 tax return and use the recovery rebate credit to get those payments if you are eligible.   However,  it is too late to use online software for a 2020 return.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2018 and 2019 and 2020 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2018, 2019 or 2020 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the FEDERAL REVIEW section. ( you should see "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount”)  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

Make sure that you enter ALL of the stimulus money received for the 1st and 2nd stimulus for yourself, your spouse and your children.

@robert woida , please clarify your question so that we can assist you. If your question is about not receiving the first and second stimulus check, then you cannot claim that on the 2021 Tax Return. You will have to file the 2020 Tax Return if you have not already filed or you will have to amend the 2020 Tax Return if you have already filed and forgot to include it.

To amend the return please visit, How to amend (change or correct) a return you've already filed for instructions on how to amend the 2020 Tax Return

Please visit File your 2020 taxes if you need to file your 2020 Tax Return.

You are still within the IRS processing window @bearded73.

The IRS aims to process paper filed returns in 6-8 weeks but says, "Due to staffing issues, processing paper tax returns could take several weeks longer."

TurboTax CD/Download is not linked to your online account.

Check Where’s My Refund? for the status of your refund.
