I filed an extension for my 2020 tax return but also sent payment through TurboTax. The IRS is now saying I owe them a few hundred dollars extra. What do I do?

The IRS is saying I owe extra money on top of the amount that I sent in, which for whatever reason, they did not receive.  I sent the money electronically through TurboTax directly from my bank account.  Is there a way to prove that I did that?

the payment, if made should show up on a bank statement. respond by writing a short signed and dated letter explaining your position, the notice, and a copy of the bank statement with the payment circled or otherwise highlighted.

if you can't find the payment then for whatever reason it was never made. your only option is to send in the payment requested.

Unfortunately, it was never taken out of my account.  I do not mind paying the amount owed, but I feel like there should be some way to prove that I submitted the payment through TurboTax.  I do not think I should have to pay the extra $300-plus; I trusted the TurboTax system to pay it and/or for the IRS to deposit/accept the money.

Well Turbo Tax doesn't take the payment out of your bank account or credit card.  They don't touch your money.  They only submit your bank info for the IRS to pull it out.   Maybe you entered your bank info wrong and the IRS couldn't get it.   You should have noticed that it never came out of your bank.

Obviously if it never got paid you do still owe it.   But it was entered as a payment made on your tax return.
