How do I file a tax return for a deceased family members company?

My father passed away in 2013, but I received a letter from the NY state this year to file a return for 2015 in regards to his company. I don't know where to begin. Can someone please tell me how to file a return for a family members corporation that is deceased who owes a tax return from back in 2015?

You are going to need a local tax professional for this matter.

My suggestion is to seek professional help from a CPA regarding this this. Reason being is there is a myriad of tax issues and documentation required that is necessary to complete this type of return.  As a result, this is beyond the scope of this service.

Most CPAs work in the field of auditing so make sure you seek help from a CPA who handles tax issues (particularly tax issues relating to corporations) for this matter, @sarah_pinheiro99.

tagteam is quite correct that many CPAs do not do income tax.

I was surprised to learn that at my nearby university (the University of Texas at Dallas, with 23,000 students) that you can get a B.A. in Accounting without taking a single course in Taxation.

However, you can also look to Enrolled Agents, because tax is all they do in one way or another. In either case, the CPA or the Enrolled Agent should advertise that they do federal income tax, at the least, and all of them will likely have access to the commercial software to do prior year returns (federal and state).

To find an Enrolled Agent near you, look at this link.

I agree with @BillM223, but I provided a link in the first post in this thread:

Thank you, @Anonymous_, you are correct that you supplied that link. I was thinking that you were referring to CPAs (but that was the next reply), so did not notice the URL in your link. Mea culpa.

I see the bad link, but will have to experiment to see how this happened. Thanks.

@BillM223

I believe what happened is you input the orignal poster's username as the URL instead of the link to the NAEA site.
