Hey I think I may have filed my taxes wrong

Have you already e-filed or mailed your taxes? If you have, then you would have to wait for it to get accepted or rejected by the IRS or State, to make any changes or amendments in TurboTax(the anticipated date for the amend function in TurboTax is expected to be available around February 26 or 27). Please see this TurboTax FAQ, How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return? Have you checked your e-file status lately to see whether or not your e-file went thru successfully? If you haven't, you can always check your e-file status here

When you e-file your tax return, your status will either be pendingrejected, or accepted

  • Pending simply means that your e-filed return is on its way and that the government hasn't accepted or rejected the tax return. Tax returns usually remain in pending status for 24-48 hours sometimes it can take longer. For more info about pending status, please see this article, What does "Pending" mean?
  • Rejected means the IRS received your tax return, but return it  because there are some errors that need fixing before the IRS can accept and process it. If your return got rejected, you would need to correct the error and resubmit it, please see this TurboTax FAQ,How do I fix a rejected return? If your tax return has no errrors in the initial inspection, then your tax return goes from pending to accepted
  • Accepted means your return was received and the initial inspection (for example, the date of birth matched, social security numbers matched, dependents haven't been claim, etc)  was passed. After the intitial inspection, the IRS will then do a deeper inspection. During this acceptance phase,  your tax return is on IRS timetable. So, there is no way of knowing exactly when IRS will finish processing your return, but you can always track your refund on the IRS website here. You will not see your refund expected date, on the IRS website, until after IRS approves the refund.  If it is approved and there are no issues with your refund, IRS will update your status, and they will give you an estimated refund date. For most taxpayers, (9 out of 10), the refund process takes approximately 21 days

To track your state tax return, see this TurboTax FAQ, How do I track my state refund?

If you haven't filed your taxes, you can always clear and start over as long as you haven't haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered. For more info, please visit

You'll have to wait a while to know what you will need to do.

If you already efiled a 2020 return, there is nothing you can do until you find out if the IRS either accepts or rejects the efiled return. Unfortunately, due to late tax law changes the IRS will not even open up to start processing until February 12, 2021, except for a few returns they pull early for testing purposes. In the meantime the return will sit on TurboTax servers with a "pending" status but cannot be retrieved to cancel or correct. So unless yours is one of the very few returns pulled early by the IRS, you won't know anything until February 12 or soon thereafter.

If you have errors on your return or need to add something, you would be lucky if the IRS rejects your efiled return. If they reject it, then you can simply correct everything and resubmit it. If they accept it, however, then then only way to correct it is through a formal amended return Form 1040X.

So in the meantime do NOT make any changes in your return until you find out if it's accepted or rejected by the IRS. If you end up having to prepare an amended return, it has to start out exactly as it was when originally filed.
