This is an advise tax forum so we can't review your filed income tax return. Please post why you think you need to amend, and we'll let you know if you do need to amend.

You may try and contact us to discuss amending with an agent. Click here.

  •  We also have a paid service. See What is TurboTax Live? Generally, you're able to purchase this service prior to filing a tax return.

Usually, you need to amend if the additional information affects your bottom line (your refund or amount due). Below are the reasons you will need to amend if you already mailed your return (or the government accepted your e-file) and:

  • You need to report a tax form you forgot about or received post-filing (most commonly a W-2, 1099, or 1095-A).
  • You received a corrected tax form after filing (the "corrected" box is checked) and the new info changes your refund or tax due amount.
  • You forgot to report income or claim dependents, deductions, or credits.
  • You accidentally claimed dependents, deductions, or credits you're not eligible for.
  • You made an error that affects your bottom line, such as reporting income or deductions in 2020 that should've been claimed in a prior tax year (in that case, you'll need to amend all affected tax years).
  • You need to change your filing status (for example, you want to change from Single to Head of Household).
  • We instructed you to amend because of a program error (uncommon).

To read the entire TurboTax FAQ, see Do I need to amend?

Generally, Form 1040-X,  Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, must be filed within three years of the date the original return was filed, or within two years of the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.

Can a TurboTax agent review my filed and accepted state return to help me determine if I need to amend ?

I am a Washington resident who works from home for an Oregon company. I usually get all my Oregon tax withholding refunded. This year I took out a eligible Cares Act withdrawal from my 401k and now have a large tax due to Oregon. When preparing my TT return  I called an agent and he told me the tax due was correct so I filed. Now after reading on this forum I see other experts say OR does not tax retirement income of full time WA residents. I think I need to amend my return but would definitely need an expert to help me. Would I need to amend both Federal and state?

If you entered all of your return information accurately, TurboTax will make accurate computations for the states based on the state laws and the forms entered.

You work from home for Oregon company, that is not your retirement income that is a job.  You live in Washington State which is where the retirement income will be taxed.  I suggest you print and review your Oregon and Washington and just take a look at them to see how the tax was calculated.  If you cannot determine, then you can request a Review with a Live Expert.

Oregon is moderately tax-friendly for retirees. As is mentioned above, it exempts Social Security retirement benefits from the state income tax. ... The state also taxes pension income, although seniors with income below a certain threshold can claim a 9% credit on that income.

Your returns have been filed already so if you would like to have a Tax Expert review your returns it may be an additional fee for TurboTax Live.  You may already have that feature if your online software is TurboTax Live.  Here is how to contact them.  Live Expert Review

Thank you for your response, but Washington does not have income tax nor do they tax retirement income.

When you file an Oregon nonresident return, you are asked in the Oregon interview to enter Oregon source income.

The screen is labeled "Oregon Source Income and Adjustments". In the left hand column, the federal amount of various income are listed. In the right columns are data entry boxes for the Oregon source amounts.

Here you would enter any Oregon source items. Your 401 distribution is not taxable in Oregon, as the others have pointed out, so enter "0" (zero) in any box where none of the federal amount is Oregon source income.

Don't just scroll through the screens.

See the instructions on the screen (at least in the desktop software): "Report the part of the following income that comes from Oregon sources. Enter zero if none."
