Apply ITIN for my wife. How long will it take ?

Thank you. Weird for my case. We received the ITIN approval letter three days after you did, and we never saw any change in the refund status from the IRS website.

Hi All,

I received the ITIN for my wife.

Below is the timeline

18th April: Filed for Federal Tax and Applied for ITIN by mail

22th April: Documents were received in Austin IRS

15th Sep : ITIN received in mail box (Date on letter 7th Sep)

Problem:

They have misspelled my wife's first name, any idea how can i correct it?

Update:

24th September: We received our state Tax refund in my account

27 September: I received revised ITIN with correct spelling of my wife's name ( we just called the IRS and explained the problem)

4th November: Money got credited in the bank account (Federal tax; Slightly higher amount because of Interest)

Received my wife's ITIN today.

Applied: Aug 6th, 2020 (in person at IRS office)

Received: Nov 13th, 2020 (Notice date of Nov 9th, 2020).

Hoping to receive the tax return soon. Thanks!

Well that is encouraging that they are getting closer to a normal turnaround time ... expect the return itself to take a minimum of 8 weeks.  If you have a state return to file you can do so now that you have the ITIN.

Now that you have received your ITIN number for your wife, you should receive your refund shortly along with any documents you submitted.  They are sent separately.  Don't forget to file your state tax return with the new number for your wife.

An update on our timeline:

March 05: Submitted W-7 to an IRS local office

Sept 14: ITIN approved

Sept 17: Approval letter arrived

December 11: Return received by IRS, refund status trackable on website

I'm still waiting for my return.

My return was accepted in mid October. It is close to 3 months now. It still says processing your refund. I'm worried when will I get the return. I tried calling the IRS but the system drops my call because of huge call volume.

Is there anything I can do ?

Got my wife's ITIN in mid Nov. Still waiting for my return as well. Cant seem to get status when searching on Where's my Refund.

@kittu1310 Keep calling them. I have spent great amount of my 2020 calling different numbers first for ITIN and then for refund.. keep pressing the options unless you get through.. Try to go to personal tax option and then keep pressing 0 until they connect you. unfortunately IRS is one of the most primitive organizations who don't believe in efficient communication.

@amir4my tax return was lying in Austin TX until I called and got them to notice that my refund is still pending. I know it's a tedious and frustrating process but you have to call them again and again until they hand you your money

2020 was not a normal year by any means ... usually the ITIN is issued within 8 - 12 weeks then the return takes another 6 weeks.  But due to the covid reduced staffing and 3 month shut down there was no standard time line.  Hoping 2021 gets things back so some kind of normal.

Due to Covid 19, many IRS offices and the Tax Advocate units still remain closed.  Most of the operations and processing time have been slowed down significantly.  Individual taxpayers that need an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) should still expect delays. Typically, a new ITIN gets issued within six weeks.  However, the current processing time for new ITINs appears to be over three months. Besides, the IRS office processing ITINs is currently not taking phone calls.

I'm really worried now. I need to get a large refund and also I have not been given the stimulus yet. I tried reaching out to them via phone several times. That is of no use at all. Is there any last resort for knowing the status update ?
