How old was he on Dec 31, 2020? If he was under 19 or under 24 and a full time student he probably can be claimed by the parents.
For parents tax filing for 2020, he cannot be claimed as a dependent. He makes too much and he is 19+ in 2020.
For him, he was 19 in 2020, he is not a student, he lived with parents the entire year, and parents provided the majority of support.
So this tells me that he files as a single but he should still check dependent because he lives with parents and does not support himself more than 50%. Is this correct?
Thanks for your help
No, if he made too made he does not check he was a dependent. He is Single. He will also qualify for all the stimulus checks if he didn't get any.
When we filed our son's tax return with him through TurboTax it told him he was a dependent because he lived with his parents and didn't pay expenses. The program knew he was 19 and that he wasn't a full time student so why did it tell him that is how he should file?
When did he turn 19?
Turned 19 in 2020.
Thank you to all for your help. He will file an amendment.
