over wrote my tax file with my daughters....how do I recover my taxes?

I filled out my 2019 taxes and filed.   No problems.

I then did my daughter's taxes.   Her first initial is the same as mine.

I didn't notice that turbotax had her file name as the same as mine.

I remember it asking me if I wanted to overwrite my file before it did, but

I thought that it was an old version of her file that it was over writing.

Is there any way to retrieve my lost taxes files from last year?   I'm hoping that

when I submitted them automatically from turbotax, that the files were sent there

as well as to the IRS and CA.

No.   If you used the same account and user ID, then the second return you prepared overwrote the first one and it is gone for good.  Sorry..

If you sent the return to the IRS you can get a copy from the IRS for a fee of $43.

You can pay the IRS $43 for an actual copy of your tax return which will include copies of your W-2’s

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

When you use Online TurboTax, you get one return per fee.  Each return needs its own account and user ID.   If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, you overwrite the first one and lose it forever.

When you use Desktop TurboTax, which you install from a CD or download to your own hard drive, you can prepare and e-file multiple returns for the cost of the software.  You can e-file up to 5 Federal returns—more if you mail the additional ones.  If you have multiple returns to prepare for family members, Desktop is more cost effective.

Desktop --unless you specifically buy federal  Deluxe only from a retailer-- will include the software for one specific state.   You can prepare as many returns for that state as the number of federal returns you prepare.  E-filing state returns is an extra fee which can be avoided by printing and mailing the states.   Additional--other--state software is an additional fee for the software.

Sorry if your wife's return overwrote your return then yours is probably gone for good.  Unless you can find a .tax2020 file on your computer for it.

Maybe you can find a temp file of it.

If you don't have the main .tax file you might have one that starts with a Tilde sign ~ like  "~your name.tax2020".  That file is if your computer crashes or your real file gets lost or deleted or corrupt so you can restore it.

The .tax and pdf files should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder.  Did you at least save a pdf of your return when you finished?

Otherwise get a copy from the IRS.  It won't be a .tax file.  You can request a transcript from the IRS

Realizing that this is WAY after the fact, but I just ran into the same scenario for my daughters that share the same first initial.  Nearly identical, I did one return, saved it, and then did the second return and erroneously saved it with the same name.  Both returns had been submitted, so getting an 'e-file confirmation was going to be difficult.

Fortunately, I use Google Drive for nearly everything.  So, I was able to locate the file within the web version of Google Drive, and through "manage versions" I was able to find the first file.  I downloaded the file to my local hard drive, changed the file name to one of my daughters' full name, and put the file back up in my Google Drive with the rest of them.  Upon restarting TT I found both files, intact.  Once I opened them, the system was able to verify that they had been accepted.

I dodged a bullet there!!!  I hope this helps someone else going forward.
