I filed a 1040X in 2021 for my 2021 federal return. Question: When I begin my 2022 return ... do I first import and open my regular 2021 1040 or should I import and open the 1040X also filed in 2021? Thanks Gus 16

Thanks Michelle. I goofed up. I meant to say I filed a 2020 1040X last year in the current tax year 2021 after I caught my error. Since we are now in the 2021 return year ... my question is do I import and open my basic 2020 1040 return ... or do I import and open the 2020 1040X filed in tax year 2021? I paid 2020 federal income tax via the normal 2020 1040 return and paid fed taxes again in 2021 via 1040X. I have a timing problem. I paid 2020 federal taxes in both 2020 and 2021.
If I import the 2020 return ... I do not recall if there is a provision to record the extra federal and state income taxes in the TurboTax query screens. Then again, I do not know if the 1040X records the fed and states taxes paid in tax year 2021.
Sorry about the confusion.
Gus
If you have the option, the 1040X since that is your most recent return.

You should transfer from the amended 2020 1040X into 2021. You should check and may have to enter any state payments you made in 2021 as a deduction for your federal 2021 (current) return. Any federal taxes you paid for 2020 don't go on your 2021 return.
Volvogirl,
Ref: "Any federal taxes you paid for 2020 don't go on your 2021 return. " Understand that taxes paid via the regular 2020 1040 are history. So what you are saying is the 2020 1040X which I should import into TurboTax will record the additional federal and state tax paid in this tax reporting year - 2021?
Here is what stimulated the 1040X. I leaned in 2021 that my mutual fund company failed to provide me a 1099-whatever for the sale of some mutual funds - regular income. The mutual fund company provided a 1099-whatever to my state but not me. My state notified me of the missing income. So I had to make a special effort to obtain the missing 1099-whatever, and then prepared the 1040X and paid federal and state taxes. [amended state return too]
So the 2020 income that prompted those taxes was recorded in my 1040X and taxes paid in 2021. Thanks Gus
It should transfer any state tax payments to 2021 schedule A, but you should double check and make sure. Unless you are taking the Standard Deduction for 2021 then it doesn't matter. The state taxes paid can be a federal deduction if you itemize.
None of the 2020 federal taxes paid from your original 2020 return or the amended 2020 1040X will go on your 2021 return.
Thank you Gus
