I just got off the phone with TurboTax. Instead of entering 0 for AGI, he walked me through some steps to go back and check "didn't file return." Since IRS has no record of my 2019 return yet, he said it'll go through. For the record, this was the third call I made to TurboTax to "fix my rejected return" and he was the only one (name is Joshua) that knew how to fix the problem.
That method worked for me also. And I got my missing stimulus 10 days later !
Can you do this method even though I already mailed a hard copy or the IRS will get confused?
I don't know. If you can get through to the IRS on the phone you should ask them. Maybe Turbotax would also know.
If you have already snail mailed the return DO NOT go back and try to efile the return ... this will only delay things further.
I believe it will be a problem if I mailed then e file..no a good remedy
If you tried to send via e-File and then sent a hard copy in its place you should not try this. Here is a number I used to call them and they did answer within a reasonable amount of time. [phone number removed] I spoke with them about the lack of a 2019 being posted and I was told that if you have a mailed copy sent DO NOT send a duplicate in any other form unless requested by them after contacting you.
Which in turn is a contradiction to what I was told. I looked it up and I was told by an accountant that the sole purpose for them asking for your AGI is for verification that its actually you sending in your tax return and not someone else trying to use your identity. The IRS put this in place as a quick method of assuming that its difficult for people to get your previous years tax return and know what your AGI would be. If they have that then they would have your other tax info as well. The computer when you Electronically File simply pulls your account up via the SSN listed on your e-File and then pulls the AGI off of it, if they match its you in the computers eyes and they accept the file. By changing the information to did not file you are putting up a red flag when the return goes through the actual process of being processed. It will see there is no 2019 filed when in fact you did and that could halt the refund or payment process for 2020. The IRS has your 2019, they are behind on 26 million 2019 returns. If you made a payment in 2019 and they cashed it thats your proof of filing. They cant get a payment with out your taxes, as no one just mails a check in an envelope and they cash it. Thats not how it works, they need to have extracted it from the envelope with your taxes.
The "did not file" option in the TT program simply puts a zero as the AGI for efiling nothing more ...you have have 3 ways to efile when using a DIY program ...
1) put in the AGI off the originally filed return ( not an amended)
2) put in a zero if the original return has not been processed yet
3) put in the 5 digit code they used to "e-sign" the 2019 return
If none of these things will work then mailing in the return is the ONLY option short of using a paid tax professional since none of these 3 items are needed when using a professional tax program.
I understand lots of people frustration...however who should be accountable for this "IRS" "Covid " combination of everything? Like I said before you can't just let this go people (Americans) need this 2019 ,2020 tax returns to get processed in order to receive stimulus payments...its different for many people who NEED this payments and can't receive them because of the lack of processing.... IRS needs to step up and find a system where they should go back and look at your 2018 returns like they did for the first stimulus check... this is not a joke people are struggling and can't wait another year or so ...not fair many already got there third stimulus checks and people like us need to wait! Doesn't make sense
I mailed my 2019 return in June of 2020. My check was cashed a few days later. It is March 2021 and IRS accounts site still saying I didn't file a return for 2019! So I tried to e-file my 2020 return today and IRS rejected because the agi (adjusted gross income) for 2019 that I was required to enter to verify my identity "didnt match" their records (of which there are none because they STILL haven't processed a return I submitted 9 months ago!
Try using a single zero for the AGI and it that doesn't work you will need to print, ink sign and mail in the return again.
They seem to be catching up. They finally processed mine after 13 months.
I'm actually on the same boat. I'm a full time college student, and need the tax return to prove for my fafsa, but there is no record shown on the irs site, and I'm so stressing out over it.
i sent my return in july 2019 and have yet to have it process. they how ever did cash 2 checks? it's been 9 months now?
