Intuit seems to have incorrect information on e-file for 1040-X

I need to amend the 2020 & 2019 returns. I have completed the amending , the online system says I cannot e-file a 1040-X.

Even this link says the same thing:

"For years prior to 2021, you'll need to print and mail your amended return. Follow these instructions to amend a prior-year return."

Can I e-file my 1040X to amend my return? (intuit.com

According to the IRS's own information, that is not true.

You can now file Form 1040-X electronically with tax filing software to amend 2019 or 2020 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR. To do so, you must have e-filed your original 2019 or 2020 return

https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040x

So then with that, how can I e-file the 1040-X?

Do I have to go through another service then?

You will not be able to use other tax software because that service will not have a record of your original 1040 e-Filing, which is a prerequisite.

With DIY software like TurboTax, only the current year 1040-X can be e-Filed, only until Oct 15, and only one time.

From the info you cited, it appears that TurboTax does not support e-filing 1040-X for any year prior to 2021.  So your choices are to print, sign and mail your amended returns or use another tax software program.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience.  This is a question that's been asked quite a bit this year.  But your info was updated 2 days ago, so you have the most current information.

@KNERD I do know that TurboTax is often able to use a PDF to amend a return prepared in a competitor's software.  You may want to inquire about the reverse using another software.  If you're able to transfer your original e-filing using a PDF, you may also be able to amend using the competitor's software.

Intuit seems to have incorrect information on e-file for 1040-X

In Feb 2022, Turbotax stated that you'll soon be able to e-file a 1040-x.  Today, Jan 10, 2023, I completed my 1040x for tax year 2021 but Turbotax won't allow me to e-file this.  The error message states that filing for 2021 closed as of 12/31/2022.   Is Turbotax just a terrible product or am I missing something.   I don't want to print and mail in 33 pages.  The IRS accepts 1040-x electronically for 2021 and any good tax software should work and allow the e-file.  This appears to be a bug in Turbotax as it does not seem to recognize that I'm trying to e-file a 1040x (includes the amended 2021 1040) and that I'm not trying to file a 1040 for 2021 for the first time.   Sadly, not only does this not work but there is no tech support to contact.  Turbotax wants to sell you a product and then just walk away and basically say we got your money so we don't care about you anymore.

this is from Turbotax posted today 1/10/2023

The TurboTax amend process for 2021 will be available soon. When it's ready, you can e-file your 2021 1040-X.

so it's not ready yet.

You are being mislead because the page was updated on 1/10/23.  I'm not sure what the update was but the original notice ( I have a screenshot) was posted on 2/10/22.  I took the screenshot before the update as I submitted a complaint with the BBB against TurboTax on this issue.  They said this would be available soon almost a year ago.  On top of that you can not contact anyone in tech support.  So Turbotax wants to take money for a product but not support the product.  FYI, here is the TurboTax posting with the 2/10/22 date

Can I e-file my 1040X to amend my return?

SOLVED by TurboTax 6084 Updated February 10, 2022

The TurboTax amend process for 2021 will be available soon. When it's ready, you can e-file your 2021 1040-X.

For years prior to 2021, you'll need to print and mail your amended return. Follow these instructions to amend a prior-year return.

Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return?  on IRS.gov.

Also, please note that companies will try to use the timestamp to fool people as they have with you.  This is a common thing for companies to do in order to support a false narrative such as in this case that they only posted info on the ability to e-file a 2021 1040x on any date they want.   You thus should know about the internet archives.  Using this tool, you can prove that the company in this case Intuit is lying about it commitment to customers.  Here is the old version of this page with the 2/10/22 date for your reference

@tetsuwanatomu

When mailing,

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

Include any new/corrected document you received only if it shows federal tax withheld, and include in order only those Sequence Numbered tax forms and Schedules that changed or were added due to your amendment.

If you are using TurboTax you have to do this by visual comparison. The program won't break out those pages for you.

@tetsuwanatomu

Only certain paid tax pros can still e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax.  Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in.  Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine  months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

But the problem is that Turbotax is not doing e-file for the amended tax return.   Every time I try it says that the filing period ended last year.  Turbotax must have the ability to identify what forms have changed and send only those forms and the 1040x via efile.  If it can't do that, then it is very poorly written software.

@tetsuwanatomu AGAIN----a 2021 amended return cannot be e-filed.  Period.   The only way you can file your 2021 amended return is by mail.  Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in.

I don't agree that you have to be a tax pro to efile an amended tax return.  The IRS page states you can efile and Turbotax also states the same thing

Can I e-file a Form 1040-X?

Yes, but only for tax years beginning with 2019. Also, your originally filed tax return has to have been electronically filed for your amended return to be eligible for e-file.

The IRS has set up a new system to handle amended returns going forward with 2019 but you still cannot e-file returns for years prior to 2019. You must print these earlier year amended returns out and send them in by mail.

Not all tax software providers support electronically filing amended returns for other than the current year. If not then you will need to file your amended on paper and mail it to the IRS.

@tetsuwanatomu Argue all day if you want to.  You cannot e-file an amended 2021 return using TurboTax do-it-yourself software.   ONLY certain paid tax professionals using professional tax software have the ability to e-file an amended 2021 return.  If you want it to be e-filed then go to a tax pro and pay the pro to prepare and e-file the 1040X for you.

You are incorrect.  From the IRS webpages

Now available: IRS Form 1040-X electronic filing (full article below)

This pages goes on to state that you can efile amended tax returns.  In numerous locations Turbotax also states you can efile.   I'm really not sure why you think you can't efile when the IRS and Turbotax both say you can.  I've also checked out other tax software and they too state that you can efile 1040x.   Yes, turbotax does not do it now but that is either a bug or a promised feature that was never implemented.

Major IRS milestone helps taxpayers correct tax returns with fewer errors, speeds processing

IR-2020-182, August 17, 2020

WASHINGTON — Marking a major milestone in tax administration, the Internal Revenue Service announced today that taxpayers can now submit Form 1040-x electronically with commercial tax-filing software.

As IRS e-filing has grown during the past 30 years, the 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, has been one of the last major individual tax forms that needed to be paper filed. Today's announcement follows years of effort by the IRS, and the enhancement allows taxpayers to quickly electronically correct previously filed tax returns while minimizing errors.

"The ability to file the Form 1040-X electronically has been an important long-term goal of the IRS e-file initiative for many years," said Sunita Lough, IRS Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement. "Given the details needed on the form, there have been numerous challenges to add this form to the e-file family. Our IT and business operation teams worked hard with the nation's tax industry to make this change possible. This is another success for IRS modernization efforts. The addition helps taxpayers have a quicker, easier way to file amended returns, and it streamlines work for the IRS and the entire tax community."

Making the 1040-X an electronically filed form has been a goal for the tax software and tax professional industry for years. It's been a continuing recommendation from the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council (IRSAC) and Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC).

Currently, taxpayers must mail a completed Form 1040-X to the IRS for processing. The new electronic option allows the IRS to receive amended returns faster while minimizing errors normally associated with manually completing the form.

Since the tax-filing software allows users to input their data in a question-answer format, it simplifies the process for them. It also makes it easier for IRS employees to answer taxpayer questions since the data is entered electronically and submitted to the agency almost simultaneously.

"Adding the 1040-X to the e-filing portfolio provides a better experience for the taxpayer, all around. It makes submitting an amended return easier and it allows our employees to process it in a more efficient way," said Ken Corbin, the IRS Wage and Investment commissioner and head of the division responsible for processing these returns.

For the initial phase, only tax year 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR returns can be amended electronically. Additional improvements are planned for the future.

About 3 million Forms 1040-X are filed by taxpayers each year.

Taxpayers still have the option to submit a paper version of the Form 1040-X and should follow the instructions for preparing and submitting the paper form. Those filing their Form 1040-X electronically and on paper can use the Where's my Tax return? online tool to check the status of their amended return.
