IND-517-02: How soon the amend take effect?

I claimed my son as a dependent on my tax return. When I e-file my tax return, it got rejected with "IND-517-02 - 'DependentSSN' in the return must not be the same as Primary or Spouse SSN on another return". It was because my son filed his tax return before me and forgot to check the box "Someone can claim you as a dependent" on Form 1040 - Page 1 - "Standard Deduction" section. My son e-file an amendment (with the "Someone can claim you as a dependent" checked). The amendment was accepted by IRS. I e-filed my tax return again, with my son as a dependent. It got rejected again with the same reason. My questions are: 1) Would my son's amendment fix my problem? 2) If yes, how long shall I wait after his amendment was accepted by IRS before I try to re-file my tax return? Thank you!

Do not waste your time waiting for the IRS to process your son's amended return.   You cannot e-file this year.   Your return that claims your son as a dependent must be filed by mail.  Print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail your return in.

This is a common problem parents often have when their teenagers or college students file tax returns.  The remedy for you is to file by mail.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

His amendment will fix your problem, but you will not be able to efile your return.

You will need to file a paper return because there is no way to get around the e-file system once your dependent has already filed and claimed themselves.  Paper file your return with your dependent included.

This article will give instruction on how to print and mail your return.
