I e-filed today and my return was rejected due to error IND-031-04. Calling IRS for help is useless. Turbo Tax hides behind their FAQ list. I entered the PIN info correctly and after the first rejection, the input box had the correct number. I do not know why TT uses a 5 digit input window for a 6 digit IRS PIN Number and why it does not ask you to enter it TWICE to eliminate an input error. Anyway I refiled using the Last 5 digits instead of the first 5 digits and it was rejected again. I have the two PIN papers right here in front of me and know I entered the correct numbers. This is A Turbo Tax bug. Any one have a similar issue?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You are confusing the 6 digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) assigned by the IRS with the self chosen 5 digit e-file signing pin that you choose yourself.
TurboTax asks if you have an IP PIN or you can use the search topics box for "ip pin" to enter it.
The IND-031-04 reject wants either the 5 digit self-chosen pin or last years AGI form the 2017 tax return.
If the 2017 adjusted gross income (AGI) or self-select PIN you entered for yourself and/or your spouse doesn't match the numbers in the IRS database, you'll get one or both of these rejections:

How do I add or remove my 6-digit IP PIN?

I entered the IP-PINs by 'searching' for that input window. For some reason TT did not ask me for that information and I had to find the input window myself. I entered the correct information and still got error IND-181-01. This appears to be a bug in the program.
I just was on the phone with the IRS (secret back number 888-841-4648. That is the number you get if you try to create an account with the IRS. My account is blocked. She could not tell me why. She could not tell me what was wrong with my e-file but insisted it's an internal code error in Turbo Tax.
Turbotax does not apparently save your self selected PIN information on the forms you print or in the actual tax file so you cannot find last years self selected PIN to reuse the same one. The help articles say you can use EITHER the AGI or last years Self Selected PIN. That sounds secure.
Turbo tax 'help' hides behind this Community board. Where is the phone number to call to SPEAK to a TT help desk????? I am still looking for that.
I get more help on things on car forums and camera forums than this site. I am going to post questions on non-turbotax forums. LMAO.

It went throw. I changed NOTHING. Not a GOD DAM THING. It was a software BUG. BUG BUG BUG.

It might have been a temporary glitch on the IRS end. TurboTax just transmits you return as you entered it.
Last years self select pins will carry forward if you are using a paid version of TurboTax and transfer the previous years data at the start of the interview. Both the pins and AGI will carry forward. Once a new tax return has been stated then it is no longer possible to transfer data.
