I received a 1099-G form AFTER I filed my taxes. What do I do?

I received a 1099-G form the day after I filed my taxes.  I don't usually get this form, so I wasn't expecting it.  It it is for a very low dollar amount, around $100.  What do I need to do?  Do I need to amend my filed return?  Or is this something I can correct next year?  Just not sure what to do...

If your 1099-G is for 2016, you cannot add it to your 2017 income tax return. You may have to amend your 2016 income tax return.

First, check if you have to amend your 2016 income tax return. Click on Do I Need to Amend my Tax Return?

If you do have to amend your 2016 income tax return, click on How to Amend (Change or Correct) a Return You Already Filed to amend your income tax return.

To add the 2016  1099-G to your amended 2016 income tax return(s) and it is for:

Thank you for the helpful information!  I clicked in TurboTax to amend the return.  After answering the questions, it appears that I do not need to report my 1099-G form because it is only related to state or local tax refunds (at least for tax year 2016). Here is what discusses the type of income that needs to be collected from the 1099-G for a tax return, found in the TurboTax tutorial.

What are government payments?

You can receive payment from the government for a variety of things, such as:

 - Taxable grants
 - Agriculture program payments
 - Reemployment trade adjustment assistance (RTAA) payments
 - Business tax refund
 - Market gains

Also reported on Form 1099-G: (but not collected here)

 - Government unemployment benefits
 - Repayment of unemployment benefits
 - Paid family leave benefits
 - State and Local tax refunds

I received a 1099-G form AFTER I filed my taxes. What do I do?

If the $100 is for your 2015 state refund and you DID NOT itemize your deductions in 2015, you do not have to amend your income tax return.

Thanks for the comment.  I need some clarification.  The 1099-G form shows "2016" in the top right corner.  However, Box 3 states that the $100 amount is for tax year 2014.  I just received this form in the mail yesterday.  So would this form apply to my 2016 tax return?  Or would I need to potentially look at amending my 2014 return?  Seems odd to me...

The state and local governments report the tax refund you got, in the year they sent it to you. You are a cash basis taxpayer, so if you had to report this as income, you would report it in 2016, when you got it. Do not amend 2014.

You either amended your 2014 income tax return or the state/local government found an error on your 2014 income tax return and it was to your benefit so they sent you a refund. It could also be interest if the state/local government held your 2014 state/local refund too long.

Thanks again for the clarification, that helps!
