So....your family members trust you enough to prepare their tax returns for them but do not trust you enough to just provide the banking information for their direct deposits? If you leave the banking information blank in the software, then it defaults to mailing a check to them for their refund. Maybe waiting a little longer for their mailed refund is a result they will have to accept if they do not want to give you banking info.
Thee is no way to leave the bank information blank on the Form 1040 if direct deposit is being used from the federal tax return.
Are they going to mail their returns or are you efiling them? If it is mailed don't enter anything for direct deposit or say you will mail a check for a tax due. Then it should leave the bank info blank and they can write in their own bank numbers.
I would like to leave it blank to give them the option of mail or direct deposit. They know about the delay if going by mail, but they don't always know which they prefer. They don't want e-filing, so a paper copy is used.. A year or so ago, there was a way to save the file so the PDF didn't have the x's. Then you could either fill it in with pen or send the field blank. That may have been "fixed" by Intuit.
