How to file past year's taxes without messing up the current year's taxes?

Sorry Online is only good for the current year.   You have to use the Desktop program for each year.  You can buy the last 3 years of Turbo Tax here,

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

How to prepare a prior year return

You will have to print and mail in prior year returns.  And if you are doing more than 1 year, send each year in a separate envelope. Sometimes the IRS will just staple all the sheets together and miss a second return.  Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  Don't forget state.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Or if you want to file for free and have a simple return you can get the blank forms from the IRS and fill them in by hand.  I have a list of some of the basic ones I can post direct links to

since online preparation and e-filing are closed by Turbotax for 2021 and 2022, you must buy the desktop app - full PC or Mac to do her 2021 and 2022 returns

2022 https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products

With regard to her return if you are eligible to claim her as a dependent for 2021, 2022 or 2023

regardless of whether you do so or not, her return must indicate for that year she can be claimed as a dependent.

the  rules

you can claim her as a qualifying child if all these tests are met
• she has the same principal abode as you for more than ½ the tax year. Temporary absences like for school are ignored
• if she is not a full-time student, she's under 19 at the end of the tax year. If a full-time student, she's under 24 at the end of the tax year.
• she hasn't provided over ½ her own support
• she didn't file a joint return unless there was no tax liability but is merely filing jointly to facilitate the refund of taxes withheld or estimates paid

or you can claim her as a qualifying relative if all these tests are met
• her gross income for 2021 is less than $4,300, 2022 less than $4,400 and 2023 less than $4,700
• you provided over ½ her support
• she isn't a qualifying child of another taxpayer
support
• Includes amounts spent for food, lodging, clothing, education, medical and dental expenses, recreation, transportation and other necessities

And if you tried to use the Online version for a prior year into the 2023 Online version you can try to clear it and start over to be only for 2023.  Be careful not to file it!

Or you can leave this account and set up a new account to do 2023.  How to start another return in the Online version

Then when you file for 2023 you need to enter 0 for the 2022 AGI since you are filing 2022 late.
