If you have not efiled or mailed your tax return you can set up direct deposit, go to the "File" section and enter/review/update your bank account information.
If you need to change your direct deposit information please see this TurboTax FAQ: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/accessing/help/how-do-i-change-my-transferred-direct-deposit-infor...
Once your return has been accepted (or mailed), it's too late to change your bank account for direct deposit. If the info you provided is for a closed or invalid account, the government will just mail you a refund check.
You can review the direct deposit account information you entered by looking on your printed return. This will be found on your 1040 under the Refund section.
If your recently-filed return is in pending status, wait to see if it is either accepted or rejected:
I'm not happy with my Turbo card with my state refund, can I change to direct deposits

What if I entered the wrong bank account for direc...
2019 1040 / tax return. Couple filled out Turbo Tax on my computer/turbo tax. Sent in paper as couldn't recall AGI amount. Had problems with return during covid and final paperwork was recently sent in to Austin IRS office. However the couple is now separating and the bank account given to IRS is closed. How do we update and possible to split the return 50/50?? Thanks (Important!)
If you have already filed your return and it has been accepted, you cannot make any changes to your return as it has already been transmitted to the IRS.
As the bank account is no longer there, the deposit will be rejected and the refund will be mailed on a paper check to the address on the tax return filed.
Please see the link below for other ways to update the information directly with the IRS.
Thanks for reply, we don't know if it's been accepted (mailed paper 1040). The IRS has twice sent letters asking for correction or issues. those should now be resolved once they get to the last paper mail in.
NOW the next concern: One of the prior married couple is ready to file 2020 (Married filing separately) and electronic submit. Turbotax is most likely to ask what the AGI was of prior year (2019), don't know if IRS has accepted such or what will work for that password....
Please follow the instructions to find your AGI.
How do I find last year’s AGI? - TurboTax
AkinaLO, NOT my question - I know AGI
The question is IF sent 2019 in paper form, and the IRS and couple are still going back and forth about it - will the IRS know it when fill out the 2020 Tax Return and submit.... Subject is Now MOOT, IRS just sent 2019 refund.
Regarding the address,
A taxpayer's “last known address” is defined in Treas. Reg. § 301.6212-2(a) as the address on the taxpayer's most recently filed and properly processed return, unless the Service has been given clear and concise notification of a different address. It is possible after filing a tax return to notify the IRS of the change by mailing Form 8822. Here is an IRS link with more information.
The bank account is updated in the same way. It will use the last known bank account but you can change it after you file. This may be important because there is a possibility that there could be a third stimulus on the way in 2021 although we do not have information about it at the current time. Here is information about how to tell the IRS about your direct deposit if you wish to change it.
