Hello, I've been using TurboTax for the past 6 years. I just got a letter from MO state stating my 2019 return was not received. When I checked my 2019 filing status on TurboTax - I don't see MO listed. Did TurboTax not file my return? I've been trying to talk to customer support for the past 2 hours.

Does MO say you did not file a state tax return at all -- or does MO say you did not PAY your state tax due? Your only proof that you paid the state will be your own bank or credit card records, since TurboTax never knows how, when or even if you paid your tax due.
When you use TurboTax your information flows from your federal return to your state return. If you filed very very early in the filing season you may have filed your federal before the state was ready to accept e-files--in which case it would have been up to you to go back later and file the state. Or did you file by mail? TurboTax never knows if you mailed a tax return. Only you would know if you put the return in an envelope and mailed it.
But.....check your TT account. Make sure you are in the account you used for the 2019 tax year. And if you save your emails, look back at your emails to see if you got an email saying that your state return was filed.
If you somehow missed preparing/filing the 2019 state return, you can still do so, but only by mail. You can still use the CD/download to prepare the state return, or you could go on the state's tax website and get the state forms to complete and file by mail. If you owe state tax due, you need to pay via check or money order, or pay on the state's tax web site.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first one will say that your return was submitted. The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected. If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.
MO says they do not have a record of receiving my 2019 individual income tax return.
TT account shows MO for 2018 + federal & KS.
TT account does not show MO for 2019. Only federal & KS.
I just need to know whether TT did the right thing in only doing federal & KS. That's why I want to speak to someone.
Apparently MO believes you should have filed a MO return for that year. You have not told us if you lived or worked in MO during 2019, so no one here knows if you should have filed a MO return.

I've been living in KS from 2016 to 2019. Working in MO for the same time. Did not live in MO at that time.
Submitted by info. to TT like I did every year - but 2019, I don't see MO return on my TT account.
My understanding is that after I submit my info. to TT - the whole point of TT is to assess what needs to be filed & then do the filing.
I've tried calling the 800 number listed in that link for several hours today - can never actually reach a person. Either they say I can be better helped online & the call ends or I get hold music after asking for customer support & then the call ends in a few minutes.
So----you lived in KS but worked in MO during 2019? And you only filed a KS tax return? You did not file a non-resident MO return?
@TomD8 ?
@neilpathare And you have not mentioned whether the employer in MO withheld tax for MO from your pay. Please provide more details.
@xmasbaby0 - how would I determine that? I checked my W2s for 2018 & 2019 - they only mention federal income tax withheld. There isn't a box for 'state income tax withheld'.
I submit my W2s to TT with the understanding that the service that I'm paying for does what they're expected to - which is figure out what forms to file. That's the whole point of a tax prep. service, what am I missing?
Also, why must it be this difficult to have a quick chat with support for a service that I have paid for?
If you have your W-2's look in boxes 15, 16, and 17 for state tax information. You should have entered the information from those boxes. And when you entered information into the software, it asked you where you lived in the tax year, then it asked you if you received income from any other state. We do not know how you answered those questions.

Wow, if only there was a way to check tax information entered into a software who's entire purpose is managing tax information! Wouldn't it be neat? Wouldn't it be just so easy if a software let you see the options and entries that you had input & the decisions that it made based on your input?
I'm trying to figure out what went wrong & you're telling me to remember an option I entered years ago. We're not dealing with paper here, there should be an electronic record of what was entered.
Turbo Tax is a massive disappointment and an utter failure to the end consumer. They have made it impossible to connect to a person either through the website or through the phone. There is no way for someone to get help. This community platform is fairly useless as well.
Well, not much I can do about it at this point, as long as Turbo Tax has paying customers - why should they care about a single person's request.
Not that this will change anything at all, but I will make it a point of informing anyone who might want to know about TurboTax - what an untrustworthy and unprincipled entity TurboTax is.
Not sure why you are surprised that we do not know how you answered the questions when you prepared your return. We are other users--volunteers--who have no access to your account or tax return. It seems that you did not file your MO return--whatever the reason is---you did not file it. If you worked in MO in 2019--even if you did not live in MO then---you were supposed to file a non-resident MO return. If you answered the interview questions correctly as you prepared your return, the software would have generated a MO non-resident return and a KS return for you to complete. So....something went wrong. You said your employer did not even put anything in boxes 15-17 on your W-2--which seems unlikely. Then you say that you filed a KS return---which clearly indicates that you did enter at least some KS state tax information from boxes 15-17. We cannot see your account--we only know what you tell us in the forum. More likely, you missed entering your MO state tax information when you prepared the return.
Since MO wants a return, you need to prepare a non-resident return for MO for the tax year in question. Maybe you also need to prepare a KS return since you say you did not enter any state tax information for 2019. Prepare the non-resident return first, then the resident state return.
You can still use the CD/download software to prepare 2019 returns. Download the state programs and use them. Or prepare them by hand on the forms from the states to mail in. Instructions were already provided earlier on how to do that. Scroll up in this thread to re-read how to prepare past year state returns.
