Federal refund

I opted in to file my taxes early. I received a date in regards to when the accepted amount of my federal would be returned. I was unaware that I would not be able to submit my state until later this month. Although, it allowed me to fill in all of the information. When I got to a certain screen, it showed my federal being more than the amount that was originally accepted. Does that mean when my state goes through it will adjust to that amount, or do I need to file an amendment? This is the first year I've had these complications filing my taxes. Thank you!

Federal refund

The IRS will not begin to accept/reject 2023 returns until January 29.   So if you still need to file your state--and most users cannot file state returns yet---you have to wait until your federal has been accepted by the IRS.  The state cannot be accepted unless the IRS accepts your federal return.

If you are not sure of the amounts of your refund(s) look at your federal Form 1040 line 35a.   If you chose to have TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund----do some math:

How can I see my TurboTax  fees?

Your state refund is a separate amount that has nothing to do with the amount of your federal refund.

And....no, you do not amend a tax return until it has been fully processed.   Amending is a special procedure you use if the return has been filed, accepted and processed but was missing some information or had incorrect information.

Just so you know

" I received a date in regards to when the accepted amount of my federal would be returned."

That date is nothing more than an estimated date.  TurboTax receives no information from the IRS after you file your tax return, and will never know if the refund is sent.   Once you file, only the IRS is in control.  You can track your refund on the IRS refund site.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

To track your state refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

That didn't answer my question at all, but I'm sure it'll help someone else!

Federal refund

We cannot know what screens you were seeing when you saw a refund amount.  The "refund monitor" on your screen shows you two separate amounts----Federal Refund or Tas Due   and below that, State Tax Refund or Tax due.   And......line 35a of your Form 1040 shows your federal refund.   Your state form will also show your state refund but we do not which state you are in and all the forms are different, so we cannot point to a line number on the state form to look at.

Sometimes people get very confused by a "summary" that TurboTax shows them which combines the federal refund and state refund.  That might be what you looked, making you think you are getting a bigger refund than you saw earlier.   That "summary" just added both refunds together.  But you receive your refunds at different times from different entities---the IRS and the state.
