Claiming an overpayment from prior tax year

When completing an amended 2021 return, I owed a balance due. I made the mistake of assuming that I needed to go to the IRS website and send those funds. I did that for Tax Year 2021. However, the amended return triggered a payment by direct debit from my checking account. The result was a doubling of the balance due.

I have left that all year planning to claim it as a "overpayment" in 2021 when filing my 2022 tax return. I cannot find any way to enter that amount in TurboTax. Some research on this site said that it would be populated automatically when starting the current year from last year's file. That is when I realized that I might have to file another AMENDED return for 2021, claim the overpayment and then apply it to 2022.

I'm simply asking if I have this right or am I way off course?
A second question is, am I too late to file another amended return for 2021 in order to retrieve this overpayment?

Claiming an overpayment from prior tax year

get Form 1040-X from the IRS Website in fillable PDF. check the box for 2021.

copy Col C from the amendment you filed into Col A and Col C.

Col B will be zero.

Fill out Lines 16-22.

Leave Line 23 empty.

In explanation, write

"This is amendment No.2 for 2021"

"I paid 1040-X No.1 amount you owe  of $nnn  twice"

your refund lines  21,22 should be $nnn.

what is the status on "where's my amended return" for 2021 on the IRS website ??

If it shows your amendment "resulted in a refund"

You don't have to do the above.

It can take over ten months to get an amendment refund, not 20 weeks

If you requested the overpayment on the 2021 amended return be applied to the 2022 return  BUT  the amended return has not yet been processed yet,  then you can indicate you applied the refund to the 2022 return however don't be surprised if the IRS doesn't recognise it yet and they send a notice for an explanation.

This has been so incredibly helpful. Thank you so much. I poked around until I found the "Where's my amended return?" The site acknowledges that the return has been received and processed Jul 8, 2022. Under "Completed" is the note:  "Your 1040X has completed process resulting in a refund, balance due or no tax change." That was a bit vague.

I then checked the IRS website for the transcript and could find that both payments were recorded but nothing indicating that they saw the error and were refunding one of them. Perhaps I should wait another couple of months (it has been 9 months) to see if the money shows up. If not you have provided the steps for completing the next 1040X and the explanation of changes.

Thank you very much.
