This has been so incredibly helpful. Thank you so much. I poked around until I found the "Where's my amended return?" The site acknowledges that the return has been received and processed Jul 8, 2022. Under "Completed" is the note: "Your 1040X has completed process resulting in a refund, balance due or no tax change." That was a bit vague.
I then checked the IRS website for the transcript and could find that both payments were recorded but nothing indicating that they saw the error and were refunding one of them. Perhaps I should wait another couple of months (it has been 9 months) to see if the money shows up. If not you have provided the steps for completing the next 1040X and the explanation of changes.
