Claiming an overpayment from prior tax year
When completing an amended 2021 return, I owed a balance due. I made the mistake of assuming that I needed to go to the IRS website and send those funds. I did that for Tax Year 2021. However, the amended return triggered a payment by direct debit from my checking account. The result was a doubling of the balance due.
I have left that all year planning to claim it as a "overpayment" in 2021 when filing my 2022 tax return. I cannot find any way to enter that amount in TurboTax. Some research on this site said that it would be populated automatically when starting the current year from last year's file. That is when I realized that I might have to file another AMENDED return for 2021, claim the overpayment and then apply it to 2022.
I'm simply asking if I have this right or am I way off course?
A second question is, am I too late to file another amended return for 2021 in order to retrieve this overpayment?
